Bowers & Wilkins adds Flex speaker to Formation Suite

B&W Flexes Formation muscles

Bowers & Wilkins’ Formation Suite of wireless speakers already consists of the Duo, Wedge, Bar, Bass and Audio - they are now joined by the Flex, to add additional options and extra versatility.
British speaker manufacturer Bowers & Wilkins had already announced its intentions to expand the Formation Suite of Hi-Res, wireless speakers when they were launched back in April, and thus slots the Flex seamlessly into the collection by promising "the highest quality sound ever found in a standalone wireless speaker of its size."

And that size comes in at 130 x 130 x 215mm (WxDxH) and 2.3kg, with a premium glass, aluminium and fabric build and sporting the same scalloped surface texture as the Bar and Wedge. It uses the same imperceptible 1-microsecond in-room speaker synchronisation and patented mesh network as its Formation siblings to stream 96 / 24 Bit resolution audio.

No doubt deriving its name from its inherent flexibility, the Flex can be used as a single speaker or paired with a second Flex to form part of a home cinema setup with the Formation Bar and Bass, providing an immersive 5.1 surround sound system. Of course, you don’t have to stop there as each additional speaker adds to the mesh network allowing expansion throughout the home and, since the mesh is independent of your home Wi-Fi, it won't affect your home internet connection as you build your Formation Suite.

The Flex features a 25 mm decoupled double dome high-frequency tweeter - which is technology found in the award-winning B&W 600 series speakers - along with a 100mm woven glass fibre mid/bass driver derived from the M-1.

Each Flex features the same premium 24 bit DAC used in the Formation Audio component and is powered by 100 watts of amplification and the whole package is tuned by the same engineers that created B&W’s renowned 800 Series Diamond speakers.

The Flex is Roon Ready and supports Apple Airplay 2 and Spotify Connect to enable access to multiple music sources. It also features Bluetooth v4.1 aptX HD.

Bowers & Wilkins CEO, Greg Lee, commented, “The Formation Flex is incredibly quick and easy to set up with our streamlined user interface. It takes just a few minutes to set up and start playing your music.”

He further added, “Once again, we’re introducing world class modern design – a product that is purposely built for superior acoustics but designed to fit into your home aesthetic and make a statement. And one of the key features is the full home scalability, the Flex lets the consumer expand through the entire home with additional Formation products that we introduced in the Spring.”

Formation Flex will be launched in the UK at the end of September and will be priced at £399
