Best TVs of 2022 - Editor's Choice Awards

Cream of the TV crop

by Phil Hinton - Updated:

Welcome to our annual Editor's Choice Awards for the best TVs of 2022

The Editor's Choice Awards celebrate the best products of the year. They are the items we think stand head and shoulders above the rest. The criteria for being eligible are simple. It must be a product that has been reviewed by AVForums and it must currently be available as part of the official product range from a manufacturer and not discontinued before the end of 2022.

It's been another exciting year of new TVs from all of the major manufacturers which saw the adoption of QD OLED by Samsung and Sony looking at increasing the colour volume available from OLED by using an RGB approach and ditching the white pixel that LG Display use in their panels.

LG Display introduced the OLED.EX panel this year and it was adopted across the high-end models from LG and Philips, with Panasonic continuing with their version of the higher brightness and heat sink approach. We also saw the decline of 8K TV in 2022 with only a small handful of models available at expensive price points with a lack of content still the major issue for the format. It's also been another great year for gaming TVs and we've recognised this by expanding our gaming categories from two to three.

As always, we have our winners listed below. And for a detailed explanation of each category, you can always check out the video breakdowns on our YouTube Podcast channel:

Best Value Gaming TV - TCL C735

TCL has been on a roll in 2022 with new flagship Mini LED sets at lower prices points and the direct LED global dimming C735 offers incredible value for money, with it selling for under £500 in the UK. It does struggle with HDR peak brightness, as all TVs at this price point do, but it benefits from having Dolby Vision and HDR10+ dynamic metadata formats to make sure content matches the capabilities of the TV. Plus, it has two HDMI 2.1 inputs and a host of gaming features that will appeal to many users.

Best Value Gaming TV 2022 - TCL 55C735K 4K QLED LCD TV SRP: £650 - now under £500

... a host of gaming features that will appeal to many users

Gaming is where this TV is strong at the price point with those two HDMI 2.1 ports and the ability on HDMI 1 to accept a 144Hz signal. There’s also 4K/120 support, AMD Freesync premium, ALLM (Auto Low Latency mode) and VRR (Variable refresh rate). Input lag measures in at 13.2ms for 4K/60 and 7.7ms for a 120Hz signal and it is all tied together with the TCL Game Bar. If you're looking for value for money gaming we recommend you check out the TCL C735.

LG extended the available OLED screen sizes in 2022 with this new 42-inch model offering up a real OLED monitor experience at a much more friendly desktop screen size. Using a normal OLED panel with the added features found on all C2 models, the big selling point with this 42-inch is its gaming capabilities and features.

Best TV Sound - Sony A95K Acoustic Surface Audio Pro+

Sony's Acoustic Surface Audio Pro+ technology is no stranger to the AVForums Editor's Choice Awards and in 2022 it continues to impress on the stylish new A95K QD OLED TV. This monolithic design language suits the use of the surface audio by doing away with TV speakers and offering up a stylish design.

Best TVs of 2022 - Editor's Choice Awards
Best TV Sound 2022 - Sony A95K Acoustic Surface Audio Pro+, XR-65A95K SRP: £3,499

... a unique and pleasing side effect in that actors' voices are coming from their mouths and not a speaker bar sitting under the TV

With the A95K there needed to be some slight changes to the size of the actuators used to vibrate the screen to create the sound, but used in conjunction with two bass woofers built into the panel, the A95K produces excellent stereo sound that holds up well to TV and light movie use. The fact that sound is coming directly from the screen also offers a unique and pleasing side effect in that actors' voices are coming from their mouths and not a speaker bar sitting under the TV. Sound quality is superb and beats many built-in speakers systems on competing TVs.

Best Luxury TV Sound - Philips OLED+937 by Bowers & Wilkins

There is no doubting that the partnership between Philips and premium Hi-Fi brand Bowers & Wilkins has been an astonishing success with TV audio taking a massive leap forward in quality. The flagship OLED+937 takes the design language with the speaker bar technology and marries it to stunning picture quality to create one of the best all in one packages we have seen in some time.

Best Luxury TV Sound 2022 - Philips OLED+937 with Bowers & Wilkins speaker bar 65OLED937 SRP: £3,199

... an astonishing success with TV audio taking a massive leap forward in quality

The 5.1.2 system employs new improved drivers and better decoupling within the enclosure, plus the addition of new side-firing surround speakers to present improved stereo and immersive soundtracks. The performance on offer is incredibly convincing with a wide sound stage that has a full-bodied impact with superb mid-range and a high-frequency response that adds to the full range sound on offer. Dialogue is intelligible and easy to follow, with effects and music surrounding the screen and some of the viewing area that adds impact and musicality to content. It's one of the most accomplished TV sound systems built to a TV set I have yet heard, it’s a real highlight.

Best Smart TV System - LG WebOS 22

If you have followed our Editor's Choice Awards for any length of time you'll know just how many times LG has walked away with Best Smart TV System. And there is a good reason for that, it still sets the standard that everyone else is following.

Best TVs of 2022 - Editor's Choice Awards
Best Smart TV System 2022 - LG WebOS 22

... sets the standard that everyone else is following

Now named after the year of release, WebOS 22 is yet another Smart TV triumph. It is almost identical to last year with a full-screen home page and various tile layers for video-on-demand services and apps. It is slick and powerful and everything works as you would expect it to, with minimal fuss. Image quality via the apps is also excellent with full menu controls available for image settings. Plus, it supports all the HDR and audio formats used by the streaming services, such as Dolby Vision, which not all competitors can boast about.

Best TV Picture Processing - Philips P5 AI+ Picture Processor

Danny Tack and his team at TP Vision continue to fine tune the excellent 6th Gen P5 AI+ Picture Processor and pick up yet another Editor's Choice Award for their efforts. While we always preach image accuracy and watching content as it was mastered and intended to be seen, image processing also has its place in providing excellent picture quality, from motion reproduction, upscaling performance, noise reduction and sharpness. The P5 processor is a powerful chip set, that gets even more powerful with the dual chip set up in the flagship OLED+937 model.

Best TVs of 2022 - Editor's Choice Awards
Best TV Picture Processing - Philips P5 AI+ Picture Processor

... all about providing choice to the end user

There is no doubt the P5 AI+ is a powerful and impressive picture processor and while it does things we don’t always agree on from an image accuracy point of view, it can also be completely accurate to the standards when it needs to be. Philips are certainly all about providing choice to the end user and for those who want a bit more than accuracy, the processor does this in a balanced and thoughtful manner, thanks to the input from Danny and his team. A worthy winner yet again.

Best HDR TV - Sony A95K

It may share the same QD OLED panel with the Samsung S95B, but the Sony A95K is certainly not the same TV as it incorporates Sony’s XR picture processing and image know-how, with it qualifying as a Master Series model; a name given to only the very best Sony displays. The A95K aims to represent the best in image accuracy for the home, based on the company's vast knowledge and experience making displays for professional editing and grading studios. You should absolutely see everything the creator intended with a Sony Master Series TV, so the challenge has well and truly been laid down by QD-OLED with this model.

... the challenge has well and truly been laid down by QD-OLED with this model

And with HDR the Sony knocks it out of the park with excellent brightness and image accuracy. Plus, OLED now has the colour volume to create the most believable HDR images we have seen to date. The differences over other OLEDs is subtle, but that little bit more convincing. With measured tone mapping and better ABL use, the Sony really excels with HDR10 and Dolby Vision content, to produce some stunning HDR images.

Best TV Design - Philips OLED+937

Best TV Design; this really is such a subjective subject matter that there will be those who totally agree as well as those who simply don't, and that is totally fine. Design can be incredibly appealing or a total turn off and it's great that we all like different things. But, for the purposes of this award, we were looking for something that was a little bit different from the usual classic TV layout and where the design was also functional.

Best TV Design 2022 - Philips OLED+937, 77OLED937 SRP: £4,799

... works in terms of an interesting design, but also functionality as a stand

The OLED+937 incorporates the Bowers & Wilkins speaker bar in such a manner that it creates the table top stand it sits on. This includes cable management for the set and the attached audio cable for the speaker. The stand is solid and the panel appears to float above it with space between the two. This all works in terms of an interesting design, but also functionality as a stand, while also completely decoupling the audio system from the screen, for much improved audio quality. We think it looks great and there is even a second mount included for the speaker bar if you decide to wall mount the TV.

Best Bedroom/Kitchen TV - Philips 48OLED807

Second TVs for many years have ended up being bargain LCD screens with the attendant technological drawbacks of the backlight approach purely because it's the smaller screen sizes that serve best in the second TV role in a bedroom or kitchen. However, with OLED TVs now turning up in smaller screen sizes with all the benefits of incredible picture quality and decent sound, the second TV suddenly manages to match your main display for quality.

It really is a great all rounder

There are a number of smaller OLED TVs on the market right now with many suiting the desktop gaming route and smaller living room roles. We chose the Philips 48OLED807 due to it excellent accurate picture quality with SDR and HDR content, a feature rich smart TV system, great sound, two HDMI 2.1 inputs for gaming and the added benefit of Ambilight, for adding a touch of extra style to the location it will be used in. It really is a great all rounder.

Best Living Room TV - LG G2 OLED evo

A great living room TV should offer some of the very best image quality you can get for TV and film viewing, with excellent screen brightness for SDR and HDR content. It should blend with the room decor and have the ability to offer good sound quality to match the image, Plus, it must handle the latest streaming services in style with all available formats and keep gamers happy with the latest connectivity and features.

Best TVs of 2022 - Editor's Choice Awards
Best Living Room TV - LG G2, OLED77G2 SRP: £4,499

... some of the finest picture quality available right now

And for this important role we have chosen the LG Gallery Series TV, the G2. The reasons are quite obvious with a TV that has a stunning design that is born to be wall mounted, so it doesn't take up valuable floor space, but if you want to mount it on a TV unit, it will also work in that manner with optional feet and decent cable management for both roles. It also has some of the finest picture quality available right now, with excellent SDR and superb HDR image brightness with total image accuracy from the Filmmaker mode. Sound quality is very good and of course, you can add the optional soundbar to match the design. Plus, gamers will be thrilled with some of the best connectivity and features available on the market and WebOS 22 is an award winning smart TV system. We think the LG G2 is the perfect fit for Living Room TV of 2022.

Best Home Cinema TV - Panasonic LZ2000

There is one brand who continually builds the most accurate OLED TVs out of the box to give movie fans exactly what they want to see. Image quality that matches how the TV or film content was mastered and intended to be seen, and that brand is Panasonic.

... out of the box the Panasonic LZ2000 still manages to beat off the competition

The OLED TV competition in 2022 is intense with so many brands now offering stunning image accuracy, mixed with good quality built-in sound systems to create excellent movie watching experiences. But out of the box the Panasonic LZ2000 still manages to beat off the competition, just.

As you would imagine the image accuracy is superb and while it doesn’t have the colour volume available from the likes of Sony’s QD-OLED A95K or Samsung S95B, the overall image quality is superb for film lovers. Blacks are excellent, just above black shadow detail is stunning and colours look natural with superb brightness from the Master OLED Pro panel and HCX Pro AI Processor.

Best Luxury TV - Philips OLED+937

The Philips OLED+937 is an incredibly well built TV using excellent materials and a unique design to create something that looks completely different to everything else of the market and it oozes quality. The use of a Bowers & Wilkins speaker bar as the stand and the remote control using Muirhead leather on the back also creates a feeling of luxury goods.

... excellent performance and a stunning design

Added to the design flair is a TV with exceptionally good image and sound quality to back up the feeling of a luxury, well built item and the addition of Ambilight is the cherry on top of the cake. The Philips OLED+937 looks the part, but it also plays the part with excellent performance and a stunning design.

Best TV of 2022 - Sony A95K

There is no such thing as a perfect TV and, with all of the best 2022 models having just as many negatives as positives, you need to choose the one which best suits your requirements and budget. The Sony A95K QD-OLED is a premium TV with a design that will split opinions and it is not so adept a performer for gamers with restricted HDMI 2.1 ports as well as a price point that will be a barrier for many.

... as picture quality should always be the main attribute that a TV does well, the Sony is clearly the best right now

However, if you are a movie fan who wants image quality that gets as close as possible to a reference grading monitor, allowing you to see film and TV content as it was mastered and intended to be seen, the Sony A95K is the ultimate choice as things stand at the time of these awards and as picture quality should always be the main attribute that a TV does well, the Sony is clearly the best right now for accurate calibrated movie watching at home.

Best TV Manufacturer of 2022 - Philips

The resurgence in the Philips TV brand has been a real pleasure to witness over the last few years. TP Vision really has listened to what consumers want from their TV sets and then added the technology to the base panels to produce its own interpretation of what a TV should be. This has seen Danny Tack and his team produce the P5 processor, now in its 6th Generation, to create images that can be completely accurate to how content was mastered and intended to be seen, but also take that a step further for those who want more from their image. With SDR and HDR images, the Philips sits at the top table producing some of the best image quality available in 2022.

Best TVs of 2022 - Editor's Choice Awards
Best TV Manufacturer of 2022 - Philips

... Philips sits at the top table

Added to this is the excellent partnership with the premium British Hi-Fi brand Bowers & Wilkins to produce stunning TV audio from built on speaker bars for the top of the range sets, along with the game changing Ambilight system that has been upgraded again this year, to produce more accurate lighting behind the TV screens.

Philips has worked incredibly hard to bring the brand back to the top of the European TV market and they have done so by listening to end users and pushing the current technologies to add something a bit different to TV design and the way we use a TV. The products speak for themselves and it is great to see such a well known brand back where it belongs. Well done Philips.
