Baz Luhrmann to make Netflix TV series
In yet another phase of their attempted domination of the TV landscape, Netflix announced they are working with Baz Luhrmann on a new series called The Get Down.
The streaming service announced that The Great Gatsby director will create the thirteen episode drama and executive produce the show in a similar fashion to David Fincher's role on House of Cards. Although if Baz is involved, we can expect a lot more singing and dancing and plenty of colourful scenes from the Aussie auteur.

The new show will focus on late-70s New York, and chart how the city, riven by social and financial problems, spawned different musical styles. The show will cover the birth of disco, hip-hop and punk, and include famous venues like Studio 54 and CBGBs. Given Netflix commitment to both 4K Ultra HD and HDR (High Dynamic Range), we can expect the new show to look fantastic when it arrives next year.

Describing the show as Luhrmann’s first music-themed drama since 2001’s hit film Moulin Rouge Netflix said that The Get Down would focus on “a rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers ... armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans”.

Luhrmann, who will direct the first two episodes as well as the finale, said in a statement: “In this golden era of TV, the Netflix culture puts no constraint on creative possibilities. So it is a natural home for The Get Down, a project I have been contemplating and working on now for over 10 years.”

The Get Down is part of a TV deal that Luhrman struck with Sony in 2012. The show’s announcement comes a month after it was announced that Woody Allen would create a new show for rival streaming service Amazon Prime.

The TV landscape is changing faster than anyone could imagine, with Netflix already sitting on a number of critically acclaimed and highly successful shows such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. They also have Daredevil in production for Marvel, whilst rival Amazon Prime is also garnering accolades for its hit drama Transparent.
