Audioengine launches compact S6 powered subwoofer

The bijou S6 aims to set a new standard in performance to size expectations, with a 6-inch woofer delivering 210W.

Coming in at the other end of the size spectrum from the Perlisten Audio and M&K subwoofers that were announced recently, Texas based firm Audioengine’s S6 powered subwoofer is a desktop-friendly 252mm x 222mm x 253mm (HxWxD) weighing in at 6.98kg. This makes it suitable for desktop and gaming rigs along with smaller home theatre or music setups.

The 6-inch front-firing long-throw woofer is housed in a sealed enclosure made from 15mm thick MDF finished in matte grey, and can be protected by a removable fabric grille. Meanwhile, the built-in Class D amplifier delivers 210W (140W RMS) of power and overall, the frequency response goes down to 33Hz.

Connection wise, the rear panel is home to a 3.5mm mini-jack and line level stereo LFE/RCA inputs so two audio sources can be connected at once, such as powered speakers and an AV receiver. In addition, for those that want to go wireless, the optional W3 sender/receiver kit can plug into the USB charging port to make placement that much easier and tidier.

Also on the back are the volume and crossover control rotary knobs with the adjustable crossover points between 40 - 130Hz letting the listener dial in exactly the sound they require. There's also a 0/180 degree phase switch.

Finally, there’s also an auto-sensing standby mode such that the S6 can detect when there is a signal from the audio source and automatically go into a low-power mode if no audio is playing, thus saving energy. This feature can be turned off using the bypass switch.

The Audioengine S6 subwoofer has only been announced for the US so far and costs $299.
