Audio-Technica has announced two new additions to its range of gamer-friendly headsets, with the ATH-GDL3 and ATH-GL3 sharing many similarities and one key difference.

Following hot on the heels of its recently released ATH-CKS50 true wireless earphones geared towards music lovers, Audio-Technica is targeting a slightly different audience with its latest pair of headsets. Designed by (Australian-based) Japanese artist Kentaro Yoshida, the new arrivals have mostly the same specs, but notably differ in that the GDL3 has an open-back design, for a natural feel apparently inspired by the elemental spirit of air, while the elemental spirit of the earth has been the motivation behind the more ‘grounded’ closed-back GL3.

By means of a quick translation, Audio-Technica states that the open-back GDL3 delivers “a spacious yet immersive listening experience, allowing users to localise sounds within an expansive sound field”. Alternatively, the closed-back design of the GL3 provides “excellent sound isolation, blocking out surrounding noise so you can hear and feel every moment without distraction.” So whether you’re exploring the treacherous landscapes of Elden Ring or blasting your way through another online round of Halo Infinite, you’ve got a couple of options on how that audio impacts on your experience.

Both models come with a 3.5mm TRRS headset connector to cover your Xbox or PlayStation needs, with 3.5mm mic and headphone plugs to hook up to a PC. They also have the same 45mm drivers, 98 dB/mW sensitivity, 10-35,000Hz frequency response and 45 ohms impedance. The only other difference is that the GDL3 is slightly lighter at 220g, compared to the GL3 at 230g – with another 7g added to both if you’re using the flexible and detachable boom mic.

The ATH-GDL3 and ATH-GL3 are both available now in a black or white finish, priced at £119 and £99 respectively (€139 and €119 in Europe). You can find out more about the headsets, plus some of the optional extras, on the Audio-Technica website.
