Audeze introduces reference LCD-5 planar magnetic headphones

The LCD-5 is the latest model in Audeze’s LCD planar magnetic range of open backed headphones and heralds a new driver implementation, reduced reflections and newly designed earpads and headband.

Premium headphone manufacturer Audeze moves on from the LCD-4, released back in 2015, to bring a general overhaul of everything from the drivers and earpads to the frame of the flagship LCD-5, the latest entry in its range of high-end reference-quality planar magnetic headphones.

Audeze says the re-design has delivered minimal reflections and resonance, improved frequency response, and a more open, yet still accurate, soundstage.

There's a new 90mm planar magnetic driver which incorporates the company’s own Parallel Uniforce voice coils for ultra-low distortion that’s inaudible at nearly any SPL, along with a new Fluxor magnet assembly. The company claims the result is enhanced transparency, accuracy and extremely fast transient response with a wide frequency distribution.

Updated custom Fazor waveguides reduce the diffraction and interference of soundwaves while the new internally sloped earpads reduce parallel surfaces and help to lower the instances of unwanted resonances and interior reflections. These acoustically redesigned leather earpads also offer a better seal on a wider variety of head shapes for consistent comfort.

The LCD-5’s comfort is also aided by an ultra light, all-new magnesium housing which provides overall rigidity and a weight of just 420g, which is a third lighter than its predecessor. There’s now an improved carbon fibre suspension headband, and the overall look and feel is enhanced by  tortoise shell acetate rings.

The Audeze LCD-5 is supplied with an all-new premium audio cable which uses high-purity, single-crystal copper strands, directionally oriented for a low capacitance and low resistance signal path, while premium quality connectors provide solid connection and durability.

Audeze CEO Sankar Thiagasamudram, commented, “Featuring our core technologies while adding some new innovations like our Parallel Uniforce voice coil, the LCD-5 incorporates decades of audio and technology research to deliver all the aspects of a truly reference audio experience."

The Audeze LCD-5 planar magnetic headphone is priced at £3,999, comes with an aluminium travel case and is now available to pre-order in the UK from Hifiheadphones.
