Apple TV+ confirms Dolby Vision and Atmos support for original content

UK price confirmed at £4.99 per month.

Apple’s recent TV+ announcement gave fans the big picture on price and availability but there were some details missing such as whether there would be 4K or HDR support straight out of the box.
Those questions have been answered by a report surfacing on 9to5Mac which spotted some support notes on Apple’s website indicating what formats would be supported and by which devices.

These stated that Apple Originals can be viewed in 4K HDR / Dolby Vision with most also supporting the Dolby Atmos surround sound format.

Devices supporting Dolby Vision include:
  • iPhone 8 and later
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)
  • iPad Pro (11-inch)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro (10.5-inch)
  • Apple TV 4K
  • Mac models introduced in 2018 or later with 4K-resolution screens.
  • iMac Pro
  • Compatible smart TVs – via AirPlay 2 from your Apple device or from the Apple TV app.

Devices able to support Dolby Atmos are listed as:
  • All Mac models introduced in 2018 or later
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • 11‑inch iPad Pro and 12.9‑inch iPad Pro (3rd generation)
  • Apple TV

Support is contingent on the named devices running the latest versions of iOS or tvOS since these will include the very latest version of the Apple TV app through which the TV+ service is accessed.

New Apple Originals will be added every month and will be ad-free and on demand - though not all shows will have their entire run of episodes added instantly. On top of that, the shows can be downloaded to watch off-line.

In addition, although there was no explicit confirmation of the UK’s inclusion at launch (only that there would be over 100 countries included), any nervous feelings about our automatic inclusion in such events brought on by Disney’s decision to pass us over for the roll out of Disney+, can now be allayed.

Apple’s UK website states loud and clear that the service is coming to the UK on November the 1st, at a price of £4.99 per month (which includes up to 6 people) and with a year’s free subscription included upon the purchase of a new iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV.

Will the low monthly subscription and DolbyVision and Atmos support be enough to persuade you to join? Let us know in the discussion thread.
