  • Whilst the Apple press conference was dominated by the announcements of the new iPhone XS, XS Max and XR - Apple did find time to give home AV enthusiasts some good news.
Apple has confirmed that the Apple TVs tvOS 12 revision will be released on the 17th of September.

The most eagerly anticipated feature will be the addition of Dolby Atmos. The Apple TV already has Dolby Vision support so it's exciting to see Atmos is also being added. When we reviewed the Apple TV 4K, the lack of Dolby Atmos support was one of the few drawbacks we could find. That, along with the quite hefty price tag and fiddly remote.

The addition of Atmos really helps to give a sense of spatial awareness, especially in movies that utilise the overhead speakers. For more on Dolby Atmos and its benefits see our Guide to Dolby Atmos in the Home .

Apple first revealed that Dolby Atmos support was planned, way back, at WWDC 2018. However, it's not until now that Apple TV users knew the exact date this feature would be available.

Apple also announced a few other improvements to tvOS 12. These included password auto-fill. The software Apple TV remote will now be inside the control centre, as standard, on iOS 12. There will also be some new screensavers.

With full support for Dolby Vision and Atmos - does this update make the Apple TV the best media streaming box available?
