The dust will have barely settled from Avengers: Age of Ultron before Marvel begin the next phase of their cinematic universe.
The film version of Ant-Man had a surprisingly troubled production for a Marvel property, with original writer/director Edgar Wright leaving just before the start of principal photography. His departure was particularly surprising because the English director had been working on the film for years. It would seem that Marvel's desire for the film to exist within their carefully constructed cinematic universe and the need to have various plot points follow through to other Marvel films frustrated Wright. Joss Whedon faced similar problems when scripting Avengers: Age of Ultron but he accepted the need for all these films (and TV series) to tie together into a single continuity.
Since Ant-Man was intended to have a more comedic tone than previous Marvel films, Will Ferrell collaborator Adam McKay was brought in to rewrite the original script by Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish. Since Paul Rudd had already been cast as Scott Lang/Ant-Man and was no stranger to comedy himself, he also polished the script just weeks before principal photography began. Peyton Reed, who had previously directed comedies such as Jim Carey vehicle Yes Man and period comedy Down With Love was brought on as Wright's replacement. The film also stars Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyke, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross/Yellowjacket and Hayley Attwell reprising her role as Agent Carter.
Ant-Man opens in the UK on the 17th of July 2015.
