A new addition at the top end of the company’s recently launched 500 Series speakers, Acoustic Energy introduces the AE520 floorstander.
Building on the AE500 and AE509 models, the new AE520 impresses visually with its imposing size and multi driver design, which includes two dedicated 125mm mid-range drivers, three 125mm low frequency drivers and a 25mm tweeter. This ocular impact is matched by its performance, reckons the renowned British speaker manufacturer.
The drive units are all constructed from a carbon fibre material that has been newly developed by the company and which has been designed to reproduce the pistonic power and accuracy of its ceramic aluminium drivers but with better self-damping, for a smoother, more transparent sound.
The lightness of carbon fibre begats a lightning-fast, natural, clear sound to the 25mm high frequency driver while also reducing resonance due to its inert rigidity. There’s also a new cast aluminium WDT (Wide Dispersion Technology) waveguide for the tweeter which is positioned close to the mid/bass drivers for optimum dispersion.
Mounted within their own sealed enclosure, the two 125mm carbon fibre mid-drivers include new oversized 35mm voice coils for low thermal compression and optimum motor force factor.
Meanwhile, the three dedicated 125mm low frequency drivers are reflex loaded by a large rear facing rectangular port and optimisation provides improved vertical coverage whilst reducing the energy that would otherwise be wasted on ceiling and floor reflections.
This array of drive units is housed in a slim-line cabinet constructed from 18mm Resonance Suppression Composite (RSC), based on Acoustic Energy’s prestigious Reference Series, which helps reduce acoustic radiation and colouration. The cabinet is then finished off in a Piano Gloss Black, Piano Gloss White or American Walnut wood veneer. Solid Aluminium bars ensure maximum stability, whilst the stiffness of the metal structure reduces the room to speaker interaction.
Crosstalk between components in the crossover is minimised by separating the PCBs that contain the low frequency filters from those for the high / mid frequencies. The signal path components themselves are all high quality with the premium air-core inductors subject to much lower distortion compared to iron-core versions. Capacitors, on the other hand, are high-voltage metallised, polypropylene wound film versions. Moreover, midrange motional impedance has been compensated to significantly reduce colouration in the lower mid-frequency range.
