Sky set to announce Ultra HD Box?

Set your TV free on November 18

by Mark Hodgkinson Oct 30, 2015

  • A cryptic teaser trailer has been sent out to members of the press indicating Sky are about to announce plans for a 4K Ultra HD set-top-box.
The video entitled, ‘It’s Time to Set Your TV Free,’ simply displays a series of ascending years, accompanied by an audio track charting some of the momentous moments in broadcast history. If it’s not an indication that Sky is about to join the ‘Resolution Revolution,’ we really can’t think what else they would have to be shouting about. Unless they are about to completely revamp the user experience to bring it more in to the 21st Century; they could be doing both, of course..

The launch of a Sky Ultra HD Box certainly wouldn’t be unexpected, especially since BT beat them to it with their IP (Internet Protocol) based service which, for the moment, is centred around BT Sports. We would expect Sky to have a more all-encompassing approach to UHD programming with at least one dedicated documentary and, hopefully, a movies option in addition to its own 4K sports.

How it will be delivered, i.e. through the dish or IP, is not yet known and what standards they will be working to will be another interesting thing to learn. Perhaps they’ll even include HDR compatibility – well we can dream!
