8K Association expands TV specifications

Industry body, the 8K Association has published an updated performance specification for its certified logo program in time for CES 2021.

The updated criteria required for a product to attain the group’s certified mark are designed to give TV consumers confidence that a TV set will meet the highest performance standards set by the industry.

TVs launched during 2021 which bear the 8K Association’s logo will benefit from the newly adopted broader performance standards. These include a requirement that 8K TVs enables access to advanced multi-dimensional surround sound formats for an immersive home theatre experience as well as recognising a broader set of video decoding standards that will promote the wider availability of 8K streaming content. These new specifications are in addition to the existing resolution, luminance, colour and connectivity requirements.

Dan Schinasi, Director of Product Planning at Samsung Electronics America, commented, “During this difficult time when a communal movie theater experience is not possible for many, the availability of big-screen TVs with super-sharp 8K resolution offers an alternative cinematic option at home.

With the 8K Association’s support in promoting standards that include audio-video performance and interface standards, we expect that more homes will choose 8K TVs and more 8K content will be soon available in those homes in the year ahead, offering an exceptional home theater experience.

The cross industry group was convened two years ago and revealed its initial specification requirements towards the end of 2019. Membership includes a range of leading AV and industry companies, such as TV brands Samsung, Panasonic, Philips, TCL and Hisense along with panel manufacturers, AUO, BOE and Samsung Display, plus a large selection of service providers and equipment makers.

Along with its certification programme, the aim of the 8K Association is to raise awareness and promote the benefits of 8K along all points of the production process from capturing, producing and distributing 8K content by creative professionals to consumer enjoyment at home. To this end, the 8K Association recently launched its Discover8K website for consumers which sits alongside the more industry oriented website.
