Hi Steve, do we need to toggle color space output between 8bit 709 and 10bit 2020 depending on HD and HDR content? 10bit 2020 does get rid of color banding but blacks are not as deep. Is this a trade-off? Thanks in advance. (Nvidia Shield TV, Sony XD93)

Hey Steve I'm having some trouble with my Panasonic UP900. It won't recognise my USB files. I've tried mkv, Avi and MP4 videos on both my Sandisk extreme 64gig (FAT32) and LaCie 2TB (NTFS) hard drive. Some files are in folders and some are not. The USB and hard drive work on my sony 55XD93

      Thanks

I've just ordered an LG 65B6V and want to use it to its potential.
Perhaps you could pm me to discuss?

Good afternoon Steve, quick question. At IFA 2016 did Sony mention that the 2016 sets would be upgraded via firmware to do HLG HR? I keep hearing info about this, but no confirmation as of yet. Thanks for the info! John.

Whilst no manufacturer would confirm that there would be an HLG firmware update for their current HDR TVs, most seemed to suggest it was possible.

Steve this is very random, but believe it or not I really value your opinions when it comes to projectors. You reviewed the Sony VW500es a few years back, one is available in the classifieds. I have 3k burning a hole in my pocket, my question is buy a 2nd hand Sony VW500ES or something newer for roughly the same money.. my old Infocus80e is still going strong after 7-8yrs.

      Hi Steve,

My friend argues that when you wrote that "The Yamaha RX-A2040 ... pipped the Marantz when it came to surround sound but ultimately lost out...", you had meant that the RX-A2040 outperformed the SR7009 by a significant margin when it came to surround sound. I'm of the mind that "pipped" means "edged", i.e. by the narrowest of margins.

Pray tell, who of us is right in this case?

      Cheers!

I don't think your word choice was controversial, but my friend's an American and according to him "pipped" could be construed as "smoked" on the other side of the pond! ;)

I appreciate the review as usual (for Sony hw40). I currently own a rs4810 (x55) and would greatly appreciate your opinion on the below:
I have always been reluctant to switch from JVC due to it's blacks/ contrast, but the Sony had that commercial cinema look (my holy grail). Could you be happy with the Sony in your own theater?
      Thank you for your help

      Hi Steve
Just wondering when you or someone else reviews the Panasonic TH-65AX900 for the lag test, try the Display port as well (not sure if it will make a difference). Have seen other lag test at 87ms with game mode. Just realised the Leo Bodnar lag tester dose not have Display port.

I read a review of this TV (from HDTVtest: http://www.*/news/kdl42w705b-201402233639.htm) but the black version, so I e-mailed them asking if they could share their calibration settings including 2-pt white balance. They said they can give me them for £10. Would this be ideal to pay for those settings or should I just stick with basic calibration (e.g. following Picture Perfect)?

Time ne 'question about the contrast settings in LCD / LED TV's.
They're in your personal settings but still very high in the test magazines.
Most already at the maximum values to be set (end).
Shorten such "high" contrast settings are not the life (durability) of the panel??

      With best regards

      Hi Steve,

I saw you recently reviewed the Sony MDR-HW700DS Headphones and I have a quick question.
As you mentioned in the review I am also not happy with the "Cinema" effect mode as it sounds artificial.
Since I use them without any effect set will I still benefit from the 5.1/7.1 surround? Of course on my Dune player everything is set for 5.1/7.1 output...
Thanks and looking forward for your answer!
      1. Steve Withers
        Steve Withers
Yes you're still getting the 5.1/7.1 effect, the Cinema mode is just added processing laid on top of that.

Hi Steve, looking to get my 50GT60 calibrated soon, I live in Milford Haven, would this be possible for you? I think I've got the set dialled in OK re: contrast/brightness. My main issues with the TV are some dither on HD content, motion issues (phospor trails/DFC) and also I would like to improve the light output during the daytime (sunny room.) Do you think the issues would be improved with a calibration? Thanks
      1. Steve Withers
        Steve Withers
Well a calibration can certainly create a good daytime setting for you but dither and DFC are just part of the way Panasonic plasmas are driven, there's nothing I could do about that. If you're interested in arranging something send me a message.

One question: On my Optoma HD25, if their is an YCbCr signal, the defaults are saturation=9 and tint=2. But with an RGB signal, I have noticed that there isn't any saturation/tint controls, but it looks like them both on 0 with a YCbCr signal. So should I use the projectors 'colour management' system to +2 to tint and +9 to saturation of each colour for RGB signals or should I just leave it as default?
      1. Steve Withers
        Steve Withers
I'd leave it on default if I was you.

Thank you Steve. Your help is very appreciated. I thought that it would of been a bad idea to tamper with the advanced color management settings, I did notice some clipping in the reds, etc, so I decided to change it back to how it was. The 'Cinema' preset, with 'Noise Reduction' and 'Dynamic Black' tuned off and 'BrilliantColor' to 1 (the lowest setting/off). Have I done everything correct here?

Hi. After about Pioneer 160, could you clear something up about the audio? Mine is an older amp without HD decoding, my Sony 550 currently handles the multi-channel side of things, outputting as LPCM though HDMI. Will the Pioneer perform the same duties as my Sony when it comes to DTS-MA, TrueHD and multi-channel PCM, and will it decode SD 5.1 signals, as recent Sony players don't do.
      Cheers.
      1. Steve Withers
        Steve Withers
Yes the BDP160 will decode all the various audio formats (both lossless and lossy) and output them as LPCM over HDMI.

      Hello Steve,
after reading the review of the 50w829b, I recently bought myself one of those bad boys. I have one issue tho with the limited options this setup gives me.

There's some noticable blue hue in the reds. Unfortunately, there's no 3 or 6 axis color correction and I wonder, if such a thing can be done in the service mode. If so, are you guys in the know of the code for this model, to enter it?

I *might* have missed this but I can't find it on the search facility.

In the old days I used to be able to see ALL products given a reference, highly praised type review conclusion in one table.

That seems not to be available now? Is there a full list of the products receiving such awards?

      Thanks, MikeH

Hi steve , i have a yamaha aventage rx-810 connected to my epson tw-9100 projector the problem is around the 90min the projector loses picture black screen the speaker icons the yamaha display disappear then 5 seconds later they all come back on as if nothing had happened , i get no warnings from the projector or the yamaha prior to the event

Do you mean after 90 minutes you lose the picture for 5 seconds? Not sure why that would be, how are the two connected and have you checked the cables and connections?

yes its like the projector drops to half power loses connection to the yamaha then 5 seconds later goes back to full ,as if nothing had happened , connections are hdmi only , sleep timer is off , its this 90min mark that baffles me steve i thought it might be a overheating problem buy there is no warning messages to say so
        thanks steve

If it's always after 90 minutes it could be an overheating problem or some kind of timer, if it's under warranty I'd get it checked out.

      Hi Steve,

I am currently looking to upgrade my Marantz CD6004 cd player and am looking at models around the £1k mark.

In your opinion how does the Oppo 105 compare to dedicated cd players in the same price bracket when it comes to cd playback?

If it is as good as any £1k cd player then I would rather have an all in one bluray/cd player and get rid of my Sony BDPS790 as well.

      Thanks.
      1. Steve Withers
        Steve Withers
I think the BDP-105 can certainly hold its own against similarly priced dedicated CD players and there are also the additional benefits you mentioned.

I am just about to buy a screen - 120 inch diag - and wonder what colour / gain I should go for. - No ambient light at all. Also should it be a flat or curved frame?

I have a 3800cm by 2270cm rear wall to project onto and feel comfortable at 2660 x 1330cm. - 16:9 - but would it be better to go for 2.35:1?
      1. Steve Withers
        Steve Withers
Well given the conditions you describe a white screen with a slight positive gain would be good. You don't need a curved screen but since the X55 has a lens memory feature, personally I'd get a 2.35:1 screen.
