Well we have decided to remove the conservatory on our house to make way for a snug child friendly family room where I can have all my AV gear and we can keep our lounge kid free. As with all conservatories, it's warm in summer but unusable in winter, so its a waste of space. My daughter is only 8 weeks old and now was the prefect time to get this sorted before she starts crawling/toddling. This is the final stage of work in our house after fully redecorating, replacing 2 bathrooms and a downstairs toilet, removing the wall between the dining room and kitchen, putting in a new kitchen and utility with access to the rear garden. We have been in the house for 8 years, but have had money tied up in investment which has only come to fuition. I have also been fitting each room we have done with a much tech as necessary so I dont have to revisit in the future.

Ok here is the architect plans. As you can see the aim is to create a door from the back of the kitchen/diner straight into the snug. We have added double french doors to the back of the kitchen so we dont need any doors to the garden from the snug making more useable space. Dimensions of snug will be 4 metres x 5 metres. Looking to create a false fireplace with some trick ideas for hiding my av kit, so sticky little fingers cant get to them. Room has to be wife/child friendly and have some sneaky storage for the various toys she will collect over time. Inspiration coming from various sources including Homerdog, Elootos et others. Hopefully will get the pics posted on a daily basis. Wish me luck ;-)

First picture is original layout, second is proposed. All work completed so far except for the final extension/conservatory replacement.

Builders turned up today. These guys are great, they have done all my previous work with exception of the bathrooms providing very competitive costs and honest and reliable work. They always provide a good finish. Well the original idea was to simply remove one wall from the conservatory and extend it out the further metre required, saving time and money. This wasn't to be the case. The building inspector wasnt happy with the depth of the current founds and the whole base has to come up and be dug deeper and rebuilt :(

This puts another few days on the build and a few more quid. The conservatory is being removed today as I type this and will post some further updates later tonight when i get home. Sorry for the pictures, its normally dark when i get home. And as you can see the lads certainly haven't messed about when it comes to the size of the skip.

Thanks for sharing your project. Don't worry about things like the foundations, best to get it done right. And get used to the sight of a skip!!!

Conservatory has now been taken down and new founds dug. Fingers crossed the cement will go in tomorrow after the building inspector has been. The skip is also getting full too.

I was planning on reusing the conservatory floor which is amtico and just getting the fitter to add to it , saving a few quid, but the sawn american oak is no longer in production. So back to the drawing board. :(

Anyway heres the pictures from todays work. I'm gonna put the old windows and patio doors on ebay to see if there are any takers, stranger things have happened.

Been thinking about the false chimney we plan on building today. Have managed to source some flush access panels from Profab.

Access Panels by Profab Access Ltd UK - Access Panels

I am planning on putting these on the sides of the false chimney and put all of my av kit in there out of little fingers way and so i dont have wires running everywhere. I am busy running an HDMI feed from the Sky HD box in the living room to here and am also gonna move the sky box from the loft into this room so I can either watch Sky HD or regular Sky so I aint fighting CBeebies in the future. Other kit going in here is

Onkyo 607, Xbox 360, WII, Panasonic BD60 , HTPC, VCR (just incase):smashin:

I also own an infocus 5700, runs component only and it needs fixing, transistor needs replacing just havent bothered to look at it, so i will also be running a component and an hdmi cable in before the ceiling goes in so i can future proof the room.

Centre speaker will be flush fit between the tv and fire, have gone for the obligatory dru metro 80 electric.

Was going to go for a panasonic 50g10 plasma, but decided to go with the sony kdl52w5500, dunno if this was the correct choice or not but i have a kdl46w2000 in the living room and cannot fault it. TV should come on tuesday (fingers crossed)

Deliveries coming every day so i'll post what turns up with pictures.

Cheers

Steve

Bulding regs guy has just been for another inspection. He's told me to remove a eucalyptus tree from the garden which is less than 10 metres from the extension. :thumbsdow Stupid really as he has been out before for a pre inspection and never mentioned anything about it. Options were, demolish the extension, dig 1.8 metre founds or remove the tree.

roof timbers in, hoping to get felt on tmr

Hello mate,

I see the the work is coming along nicely! Some nice brickwork there too. I own a building company in Lancashire and am one of those sad gits that loves his work. I have just recently completed my own setup which I will be posting on AV forums very soon.

I was like a kid at Xmas, loved every minute of it, especially when researching for and buying all my AV gear. I have fitted loads of home cinema setups in the past mainly due to me being the main contractor, some small, some large but it is still my favourite part of any build when it comes to fitting all the AV gear. Enjoy it all, take your time and get it right first time.

The guys on the forums are brilliant, if you ever need to find any info its here! very helpful people indeed.

Looking forward to following your build with interest. I hope it all goes well for you and your family.:)

Cheers  my only concern is the wall mounted centre speaker, but we'll see how that pans out

The builders' work looks very neat. You must be pleased. The new room will look well against the house.

Are they keeping the site tidy or do you pick up after them?

Those roof timbers look very solid. I completed an extension last year with an 8 metre span and the wood was less substantial than yours (obviously complied with regs!).

My AV only went as far as ceiling speakers and routing associated cabling back to a central TV location.

Cheers!

No lads are very tidy, they know how fussy I am. Bit of OCD

Builder got rained off on friday so have had a chance to sort other things out and spend some family time over the weekend.

Started to get a bit concerned after reading Homerdogs post about the correct viewing height for the DRU fire and then realised I had a flush fit centre speaker and TV to go above.

So dunno if it was a good idea or not but decide to take a chisel to The DRU

First was to remove the top of the fire. This is only held on by some very fine pop rivets so a couple of hits with a chisel and bingo
