September gave us a pretty good choice of new Netflix shows and films and, moving into the last quarter of 2020, the world’s number one streaming service looks to be keeping up its game for October.
Updated: 21-Sep-2020; 24-Sep-2020; 29-Sep-2020; 30-Sep-2020; 08-Oct-2020
Netflix is a US service, and what do Amercians absolutely go nuts for at this time of year - yup, Halloween. So expect plenty of films and specials concentrating on All Hallow’s Eve, with hardcore horror being served up along with more family friendly spooky comedies.
So for every unsettling Haunting of Bly Manor there’s a Hubie Halloween, for each gruesome Cadaver there’s a more light hearted Addams Family Values.
But it’s not all ghosts, ghouls and goblins, with Netflix’s animated family adventure Over The Moon hitting the service and David Fincher’s personal project, Mank, about the screenwriter Herman J.Mankiewicz, which features a script written by Fincher’s late father.
Of course, once Halloween’s out of the way in a few weeks, expect the avalanche of Christmas oriented content which will either be something warm and cosy to look forward to at the back end of a truly dreadful year or something horrifically corporate and cloying, depending upon your view.
So let’s lift the coffin lid on October, bearing in mind the ever present proviso that although we’ve tried to be as UK specific as possible, start dates can change, content can sometimes be territory specific and shows can even get yanked by Netflix themselves.
Pick of the Shows
Emily in Paris (2020, S1, Netflix Original Series)
Fish out of water comedy starring Lily Collins as Emily, a driven, twenty-something American midwest woman hired by a marketing firm in Paris to provide them with a U.S. perspective on projects. Inevitably, cultures soon clash as she adjusts to the challenges of life in a foreign city, while juggling her career, new friendships and love life.
From Darren Star, the creator of Sex and The City
Dick Johnson Is Dead! (2020, Netflix Documentary)
Dick Johnson is a retired clinical psychiatrist who is suffering from dementia. This documentary drama is centred around his daughter, filmmaker Kristen Johnson, preparing him, her family and herself for the end of his life. Using every escapist movie-making trick in the book - staging inventive and fantastical ways for her 86-year-old father to die - Johnson hopes that cinema might help her bend time, laugh at pain and keep him alive forever. Darkly funny and wildly imaginative, the film is a love letter from a daughter to a father, blending fact and fiction to create a celebratory exploration of how movies give us the tools to grapple with life’s profundity.
The film premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Award for Innovation in Non-fiction Storytelling.
David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (2020, Netflix Original Documentary) - added 24-Sep-2020
David Attenborough is a national treasure and possibly even an invaluable global resource as he has seen more of the natural world than any other living soul. This unique feature documentary is his witness statement as he reflects upon both the defining moments of his lifetime and the devastating changes he has seen. Set against his vision of the future, he implores mankind to work with nature rather than against it as he delivers a powerful message of hope for future generations and reveals the solutions to help save our planet from disaster.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020, S1, Netflix Original Series)
A young governess is hired by a man to look after his orphaned niece and nephew at their family country house after they fall into his care. Soon after arriving at the Bly estate, she begins to experience strange occurrences and a grim history starts to unravel.
Director/writer, Mike Flanagan, who respectfully and successfully took on the Stephen King's Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, loosely adapts Henry James’s 1890 novella Turn of the Screw as the framework for The Haunting of Bly Manor. The series features the return of many of the creative team behind The Haunting of Hill House and creates an anthology based spiritual successor even though the two narratives will be unconnected.
Expect more Netflix creepy content from Flanagan as his Intrepid Pictures firm has a development deal with the streaming giant. No doubt October will be a launch pad in the coming years for more high profile horror releases with Flanagan's name stamped on them!
Added 24-Sep-2020: The latest trailer for The Haunting of Bly Manor (below) bizarrely features a spooky arrangement of Mötley Crüe’s Home Sweet Home from the Theatre of Pain album - Vince and the boys would be proud.

Eight year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer and, for the first time in her life, she feels herself fully in control. By the age of sixteen, she's competing for the U.S. Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

When the parachute drop goes wrong, the desperate soldiers join forces with a young French villager to infiltrate the target tower. Inside, they discover a mysterious Nazi lab and the outnumbered G.I.s come face-to-face with enemies unlike any the world has ever seen.
A favourite with the AVForums testers, the opening sequences of Overlord gives home cinema systems a real audio workout.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020, Netflix Original Film, True Life, Drama, Thriller. Eddie Redmayne, Alex Sharp, Sacha Baron Cohen, Dir. & Scr. Aaron Sorkin )
What was intended to be a peaceful protest at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois turned into a violent clash with police and the National Guard. The organisers of the protest were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot and the trial that followed was one of the most notorious in US history.
Historical drama written and directed by Aaron Sorkin based on the real-life controversial trial of the Chicago 7, the project was originally eyed by Steven Spielberg back in 2007 with a group of unknown actors. Even though it has taken 13 years to get to the screen, its relevance to current political, social and cultural upheavals in the US will be lost on on-one.

His co-director, John Kahrs is no slouch either having worked on A Bugs’ Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, The Incredibles, Bolt, Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen. Ok, these two are basically animation Gods!
Mank (2020, Netflix Original Film, True Life, Drama. Gary Oldman, Lily Collins, Tom Burke, Amanda Seyfried, Dir. David Fincher. Scr. Jack Fincher)
Sadly, Netflix has now confirmed that Mank won't be with us in October. Instead, it will be released in select theatres during November followed by a streaming bow on Netflix on 4th Dec. The limited theatrical run is presumably to ensure awards contention at the delayed Oscars in 2021 - the specifics of a UK cinema run have not been announced.
To make up for the disappointment of the delay, the official teaser trailer is below:
In 1941, Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz has to overcome personal and professional demons to get Citizen Kane made. His job? To write the words. The development process is tumultuous and his deteriorating relationship with wunderkind Orson Welles does nothing to help.
David Fincher’s last movie was 2014’s Gone Girl and he’s stayed with Netflix post Mindhunter and Love Death & Robots for this adaptation of his late father’s script which was itself based on an article by renowned film critic Pauline Kael in which she espoused that Orson Welles did not deserve screenwriting credit for Citizen Kane. The claim was vociferously denied by many. But the Fincher father and son duo clearly felt there was plenty of narrative meat in the accusation and Hollywood (well, Netflix in this case) sure does love films about films!
