OLED+935 – Adding extra intelligence to create a new flagship TV

Hopefully many of you, as knowledgeable AV enthusiasts, have been following our journey with the Philips P5 processor over the past four years – and also our exciting partnership with Bowers & Wilkins on our OLED+ flagship sets.

We believe that the P5 processing suite has changed people’s perception of what reference quality TV images can and should be - particularly when partnered with the latest OLED panels - and has continually done so as Philips TV developed the processor over the subsequent years.

That development programme has taken a significant step-up again in 2020 with the arrival of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the fourth generation of P5, first appearing to great effect on the OLED805 model.

Now with the arrival of the OLED+935 TV, Philips will offer an enhanced version of the system called AI+. The extra processing power required for the AI+ system has been provided by the in-house development a second AI dedicated chip to work in parallel with the 4th Gen P5.

This new Intelligent Dual Engine version of the processing suit is used in the OLED+935 and allows Philips TV to add new and improved functionality to the P5, including a new dedicated AI Machine Learn Sharpness function, an improved AI Smart Bit Enhancement system and an improved version of our unique Perfect Natural Reality (PNR) feature.

Perhaps most importantly for OLED technology, Philips AI+ adds a new anti-burn-in system.

But what is AI and how does it work with the five picture quality pillars?

AI functionality uses neural networks and machine learning to analyse and compare millions of PQ test clips from a unique database created by the Philips TV development team over the past 30 years.

The AI software does not simply seek to increase the output level from each of the five picture-quality pillars (source, colour, contrast, motion and sharpness) but is designed to create a better balance between them - and as such a much more realistic, natural image that no longer feels like ‘regular’ TV.

3.jpg

The additional power of the new AI+ system has also allowed a clear improvement to the Smart Bit Enhancement feature, effectively allowing video resolution to be extended from 8 bits to14 bits and allowing the more precise correction of banding due to poor quality sources, - while focused specifically on the areas in which the banding occurs.

4.jpg

AI+ also includes a new AI Machine Learn Sharpness feature. Unlike many processing suites, that apply the same sharpness enhancement across the whole of the image, AI Sharpness uses machine learning to intelligently analyse the image and apply different and appropriate levels of sharpness to different parts of the image.

Philips TV’s Perfect Natural Reality (PNR) feature has already received many plaudits from consumers, trade and media alike for its outstanding ability to convert SD images to HDR quality.

The AI+ system brings new levels of realism to the Improved2 version of Philips’ PNR with a new highlight detection system creating more natural sharpness and deeper details for better depth impression.

6.jpg

Most importantly for AV enthusiasts considering purchasing an OLED set, the new Intelligent Dual Engine version of the processing suit also has the additional power to offer a unique anti-burn-in solution that uses an advanced logo detection function to monitor a grid of 32,400 zones, to very accurately detect static content and gradually reduce the intensity of its local light output and avoid burn‐in - and without compromising the output of other parts of the screen.

Sound by Bowers & Wilkins also reaches new heights

While the enhanced AI+ system allows the OLED+935 to produce the most accurate, natural and realistic images of any TV, our audio partners Bowers & Wilkins have also ensured that the sound system reaches new and revolutionary levels of audio performance.

9.jpg
The OLED+ 935 is the first Philips TV to feature both dedicated Dolby Atmos Elevation drive units and Bowers & Wilkins’ unique, central Tweeter-on-Top assembly - all mounted in a separate speaker enclosure that combines with a minimalist metal angled arm to act as the set’s table-top stand.

There is also a longer wall-mount option included with the set.

As with Bowers & Wilkin’s legendary high-end speakers, the Tweeter-on-Top mounting decouples the tweeter from the larger drivers and ensures that high frequency performance is delivered without the blurring associated with cabinet diffraction – caused when tweeters are mounted inside larger cabinets.

The new enclosure’s rigid speaker housing is constructed from thick-wall-section glass-fibre-reinforced ABS, critically braced with internal rib sections to control any unwanted resonance. The enclosure is now mounted to the panel using a new, stiffer metal mounting plate to further enhance its performance. In total, the OLED+935 features ten drivers in a 3.1.2 specification, including three 19mm titanium-dome tweeters in a forward-firing left, centre, right (LCR) configuration.

10.jpg

All three tweeter assemblies are decoupled from the speaker enclosure for superior performance, with the Tweeter-on-Top mounted in its own rigid, chrome metal enclosure and supporting its partnering mid-range driver unit to create a dedicated centre-channel array.

Tweeter grilles follow the acoustically open design first developed by Bowers & Wilkins for its legendary 800 Series Diamond range.

The tweeters are joined by four 50mm midrange drive units: two mounted centrally and one at each end of the speaker enclosure. The OLED+935 also has twin 50mm upward-firing Dolby Atmos Elevation units mounted on the top of the enclosure to give extra scale, height perception and immersion to the audio reproduction of films, games and sports broadcasts.

Room-filling bass is provided by a new racetrack-style 100mm x 65mm subwoofer unit, ported to the rear of the speaker enclosure using Flowport technology, as developed by Bowers & Wilkins for its core loudspeakers.

There is also a subwoofer out for even more bass extension should the AV enthusiast or their room require it.

The OLED+935 will also automatically recognise and decode Dolby Atmos content to ensure the very best results. Alternatively, by engaging Movie mode, the TV will use ‘up-mixing’ with non-Dolby Atmos content to bring outstanding, three-dimensional immersion to older types of content from its Elevation drive units.

Designed to be the best

For Philips TV, premium quality extends to how a set is designed and made, and you can always guarantee that the best-in-class performance will be matched by the best in design - the OLED+935 is no exception.

The set features an ultra-slim chassis, edgeless bezels and a high-quality metal finish.

Specially selected, acoustically transparent Kvadrat cloth is featured on the grille across the front of the speaker enclosure while a new metal micromesh fascia is used for the first time on the upper surface of the enclosure, to further optimise the TV’s Dolby Atmos performance.

A new, premium remote control with elegant, flush, backlit keys in a metalized finish has also been included, with the sides and rear of the RC wrapped in responsibly sourced leather from Scottish specialists Muirhead.

Finally, four-sided Ambilight technology combines with the superb on-screen images and ultra-slim bezel to create a totally unique, immersive viewing experience.

So, for image quality, audio performance, design and the all-round owner experience the OLED+935 launches as the new, peerless, reference for the premium TV market.

Very informative and this TV is already top of my list.

This model only seems to be available from Richer Sounds and Currys. Will other retailers stock it? I am surprised John Lewis do not having any 2020 Philips OLED's listed this year - they have sold them every year since the POS901.

I've now had the 55" for 2 weeks and have been blown away by the PQ.
After a week of viewing the 'Out of the Box' settings, I tweeked a few settings for the HDMI 1 link to my Virgin Media V^ cable box resulting with 'Standard' Picture style and some 'Motion' & 'Noise' adjustments.
I then set the Picture style for Freeview on 'AI' without any further tweeking and compared the PQ to the HDMI 1 settings. AI was the winner, so HDMI 1 is now set at 'AI' as well.
The P5 AI algorithm is certainly producing the very best PQ I've ever experienced.
Hats off to Philips. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My Samsung Tablet photo screen shot of Strictly Come Dancing BBC One displaying 1.073billion colours. :D

Looks awesome. I see 1.074 billion personally :D

This TV seems to be only available at certain stores. Philips also seem to have a strange release cycle. Everyone is out there hitting the BF deal on TVs but this model is now too new to discount.

I've just done a recount on instructions by President Donald Trump..result 1,073,741,824 colours.

My 55" was launched at £1,999 on 1st September, the price of which I paid on 31st October from Richer Sounds.
In early November the price was reduced to £1,699 by both Richer Sounds and Currys as 'Black Friday' deals. The prices of the 48" and 65" models have also been reduced by £300 to £1,499 & £2,399.

These price reductions are similar to those of the equivalent spec TVs from Panasonic (HZ series) i.e with enhance audio.........Black Friday, Price Match, Battle of the Brands is now in full flow. :smashin:

I have now received my 'Price Match' refund of £300 from RS:D

I wonder how this 935 compares to previous year’s 65OLED984? I noticed that 2019’s 934 model is replaced by 2020-935 then 2021-936, but 984 is not replaced by 985/986. Any idea?

Aside from 935 having improved P5 processing AI capability, and smaller but more speaker elements, would like to know real life use comparison.
