AVForums Weekly Round-up
Apple and Sony vie for the headlines
It’s been another very busy week here, not only in the wake of IFA, but more topically because of a couple of huge product launches making the news.
ReviewsWith the majority of major TVs for 2016 having all been covered – although there’s another biggie waiting in the wings for review – things are relatively quiet but there was still some interesting and impressive hardware to look at.
First up was the Aorus X5S v5 Camo 15.6" UHD Gaming Laptop, which came with an outdated promise over its prowess but it was still a good performer. In the Hi-Fi department came a great value proposition in the shape of the Numark TT250USB Turntable which, while primarily aimed at the aspiring DJ, had enough features and fidelity to make it an ideal starter deck for home use. By far the smallest item we’ve reviewed in the AV field is the Wetek Hub but its miniscule proportions didn’t stop it from being a powerhouse 4K capable player with top quality added value features and excellent manufacturer support.
Movie wise, there’s an excellent Blu-ray release, a predictably bad remake and a sci-fi movie which is just plain predictable. If you thought Winter Soldier changed the shape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wait until you see the Blu-ray release of Captain America: Civil War, said Cas Harlow, and he rates it as unmissable. Ben Hur, on the other hand, according to Sharuna Warner, is an unnecessary remake of the classic tale that is long on CG and short on charm, raising the question why did they bother? Sharuna also reviewed sci-fi thriller Morgan, the film was produced by Ridley Scott, and sees a group of scientists playing god with predictably disastrous results.
NewsYou can’t fail to have noticed that Apple announced a pair of new iPhones this week and we were lucky enough to get a hands-on. Apple also used the event to launch the Apple Watch Series 2. On the same day, another behemoth of the tech industry held their own (shambolic) event when Sony officially announced the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro but there was one glaring feature omission in the latter.
Slightly less fanfare surrounded the news of the World’s first planar magnetic in-ear headphones, from Audeze, and new travel friendly headphones from Bowers & Wilkins. While Minix launched a new fanless Mini-PC – the Neo Z83-4 – that we’ll be testing out as an HTPC in due course.
Forum DiscussionPredictably, the Apple news made for some major forum discussions but there was plenty more besides with the following merely a tiny fraction of the topics discussed on AVForums this week.
iPhone Upgrade Programme
No UHD Blu-ray Support on PlayStation Pro
Xbox One Destiny Weapon Tuning - Rise of Iron
iPhone 7 no headphone jack - lightning cable worries
