Downloading to test in Virtual Box but on first glance at the previews it's all a bit Windows Phone for me. Can't really say I've ever been keen on Metro. Still, it's new and I always like to check out new releases so I'll give it a whirl and hopefully will be able to make it look all nice and minimalist :)

I really like how well the desktop runs, I like Metro UI as I use a Windows Phone 7 so I'm used to the UI already.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to go back to Windows 7 as the Xonar app doesn't work in W8 so I can't use the headphones plugged into my front panel of my PC :(

Doesn't work. The registry key was removed for the Consumer Preview, tested it last night - It was available in the Developer Preview.

You can either add a 'Toolbar', by right clicking on the Taskbar and pointing it to the Program Data\Microsoft\Start Menu directory or install StartVi.

Anyone know if it's possible to upgrade a Vista install to Win8?

    Upgrade? pfft dirty word.

    Clean install ftw.

+ Im sure windows 8 is based on the same stuff as 7, and in 7 could you not only upgrade from XP as it was based on the same stuff not vista?

Think I read only windows 7 is upgradable and any OS below is a fresh install.

It seems that a third-party software company is creating a free to use Start button in its familiar position at the bottom LHS of your screen. It will have all the usual Start menu functions, e.g Shut Down, Run, Search, etc.

Stardock CEO Developing Start Menu App for Windows 8

If this is available for the launch of Windows 8 then I'd definitely consider it as a viable alternative to Win7. Wolvers posted a link that showed the advanced features Win8 will have that MS haven't included in previous operating systems.

And for those of you who dislike the ribbon perhaps somebody will modify the registry to disable or hide it if you decide that you don't want it on your screen.

So glad the start menu is being address by someone. It seem so stupid that MS dont just give you the option.

Anyone know how much is Win8 going to cost?

Just a thought is there isnt that much added to the desktop mode and I dont think it is going to be worth me buying a copy for more than £50.

What's the difference with that alternative Start menu for Windows 7? It just looks the same to me?

It looks better than the Start Menu provided with Windows 8... As there technically isnt one!

I have no idea what the advantages of ViStart are.. But it works a treat in Windows 8!
