Well the 'best' would obviously be the most expensive since that will be the newest and the fastest, maybe you should give an idea of budget

The best chip would be a recent socket 939 Athlon. However the best combo would be a recent Intel 775 chip with the latest available Intel chipsets (IMHO). While the Athlons hold the torch for superior gaming, Intel still has a lot to offer HTPC'ers. And in any case whatever your choice, there will only be a few percentage points in it performance wise, with stability being a major consideration, hence my vote for Intel. And before anyone thinks I an knocking Athlons, I am not. I just think for certain applications Intel takes the guesswork out of trying to find a stable CPU/mobo combo.:)

Well I got impatient and ordered the following package...
    • Intel Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz Socket LGA775, 2MB, EM64T, BOXED w/fan
    • MSI 945P NEO2-F, I945P, Socket-775, ATX S-ATAII, GbLAN, DDR2, PCI-Ex16
    • TwinMOS DDR2 PC4300 1024MB Dual Pack KIT w/two matched DDR2 PC4300 512MB CL4

Probably made the wrong choice, it came to £239.

Also ordered a quiet PSU, now need to get myself a PCI-E Graphics Card and a DVD Writer.
