I bought a system from this forum as a gift for a family member, and it turns on ok, but displays "demo mode" in the bottom right, no settings and only a few pre-loaded demos.
I've tried resetting it and swapping out the memory card but can't seem to get it working, anyone got any ideas?

I was woried that might be the case. The guy said he had won it and was selling as he didn't need it, came with the full box, although I guess he could have swapped it out. I'll see what his responce is.

If you've held the power button in for 30 seconds and told the system to reboot, reset and then still see the demo on the bottom right then it is a demo model for stores and I don't think you can do anything about it :(

    Any good...
Have you got a link or something to login and download firmware updates, if so check there. If not, did you try the keys like PS3 has (L+R+Select+Square) to get to the unlock screen?

If you can get to the unlock screen:
    - try the latest PS3 (4.00) code 0219
    - try bruteforce seems to be the last resort :(

    Other things to try:

Go to Settings > System > System Information
    Press simultaneously R + L + DPad Left + Square for a few seconds
Release those buttons then immediately press the start button

    What does it say there?

You may want to try to go to recovery and check the options there:

This is for 1.5.1, 1.5.0 is a bit harder to enter!

There is no link to the settings on the screen, I've managed to get into the boot menu and can update via my ps3, so will give that a go.

Just a thought, anyone know if the serial from the machine is repeated on the box or manuals anywhere?

I've got my own one too, but the box is packed away, I'll have to dig it out.
I've had a bit more of a play, but no luck unfortunatly, have to see what the seller says. Hopefully he responds soon, I need it for the weekend.

Let me check, i have my box here....

Serial number on Vita should match the bottom number between the hypens

On the console it starts HB then 0000000 but on the box it is S01-0000000-8. The 0's i put there represent the serial.

The serial number matches the box, do the kiosk machines come fully boxed? Seems strange to me.

Yeah, should be in a plastic coated slip box. This sounds like a dev or kiosk model. Either way they are not readily available...kiosk model is likely stolen or taken after being used for a demo. If so, there seems to be no way to fix it. Does it play games or does it have dolphins and seashells on the screen?

Have you asked the seller how he is so lucky as to have won this in a competition...and an iPad...and an Xbox Elite...?
All of which he has sold on this forum for seemingly very competitive prices...

The demo units did ship in a box to stores, and are NOT for resale, hence the "Demo" overlay on the screen.

And the dolphins demo worked on all Vita's prior to 1.5 system update, but was disabled/removed on later ones.

If the seller has indeed "won" it, in his work as he states, then it's been stolen prior to being handed out, as a "prize"

If you can get into recovery mode where firmware can be updated, you should be able to replace the demo firmware with a stock version, try that if you get no luck from the seller.

Where do I get firmware to replace it? I'm hoping the seller will come back soon, it's a gift I need for Friday, which also makes me less willing as I don't want to give it to someone then it go wrong.

I am interested where he got it from, especially since the other two things he has sold recently are unwanted prizes as pointed out before.

Just enter a few more competitions, if you are anywhere near as lucky as the seller of this appears to be you will be laughing.

PS Vita Firmware - PS Vita CFW

I would wait and see what the seller says first.

If the seller has knowingly sold you a demo model good luck getting a refund, especially looking at the other stuff he has for sale :(

Not only that, good luck getting it serviced/repaired by Sony, as it's got zero warranty, as they will know, regardless of firmware version, that it's a demo pod model.

C,mon guys...don't kick him when he's down. He bought it as a new retail model in good faith on these forums. If it is dodgy it is up to the seller to refund or legal action would ensue. If there is no good reason for having a demo model then it might be a police matter as the unit is likely stolen.

Either way, OP should get a full refund and seller would be wise to do it quickly before it gets any messier than it already is.

I would have gone straight to the dispute threads, and wanted a refund, as it's not a retail model, and will have no warranty.
Apparently the seller is "away" at the moment, so I hope the OP does get a decent resolution from it.

And it appears the OP has purchased another Vita, in the classifieds.

He nearly bought mine but I pointed him to a better deal. Now I just sold my Xperia Play i'm glad I did as I now only have the Vita with 'real' buttons to play on...:D

I hope he gets it sorted too.

Yeah, it was a gift I was buying on behalf of my girlfriend, so couldn't turn up without one. Hopefully no problems with this one.
Good news is the seller has got in touch and offered a full refund, he hadn't realised it was a store model. Hopefully will have the money back for that soon.

Splinters, thanks for your help, hope you still use the vita, my xperia play isn't getting used for any games at the moment. May purchase a game or two off you if you are still considering selling them when I get the refund.
