I have been told that if you lay a plasma tv flat on its back (or front) the display will be destroyed - or at least damaged. Is this an urban myth or have I been had?

    cheers

You can lie them down flat if you are careful, but whatever you do don't transport them lying flat.

The top piece of glass is very thin, if it flexes it will crack.

Think about how people carry big panes of glass, it is always upright where the strength is, turn it on its side and it can crack under its own weight.

They don't travel well laying down because they can't bear their flex under their weight and size if subject to a lot of movement/rocking.

Laying one down temporarily will not destroy it.

So from the replies so far it's the glass that's the problem, so is that true for LCD screens as well i.e. they are relatively thin and may crack if layed flay?

    Cheers

Almost every screen I've had, has recommended laying the display down flat to attach the stand, so that's certainly not an issue. It's only when transporting the screen you have to make sure it's vertical.

I am pretty sure LCD's don't have a glass front so I would imagine you can lay them down flat..................and then jump up and down on it and go out and buy a plasma:devil:

The Pioneer manual for my 504 specifically advises you to lay the panel face down when fitting the speakers.
