    Hello there,

I'm in the process of selling my 60 gig PS3 and was hoping somebody could tell me how to transfer all my data to a external hard drive so I do not have to play hundreds of hours of gaming again :(

    Thanks in advance.

    Go to the XMB
    System settings>Back up utility>Back up

Any protected saves(Game saves that can't be transferred using this method) will either not copy, or copy, but when you restore them onto another PS3 will not be recognised.

You are always better off using the data transfer utility, as it transfers everything(including protected saves), but you need to have the two consoles at the same time, and connect them together with an ethernet cable.

Always deactivate the console that you are getting rid of before letting it go to a new home.

It's in Account settings. You get 5 downloads of each item you purchased off PSN. If you de-activate your account on that PS3 then you get that download back. If you don't, then one of the downloads is still assigned to that PS3, & you'll lose it.

Then restore the machine to factory settings, and format the hard drive.

Backup ps3 either by backup utility or copying stuff individually...

Deactivate machine under all users / psn IDs...

Create new user and delete all other users...

"Restore ps3 system" to format it and return it to factory settings in one go...

    Job done! :smashin:

(did this a few times as I had a ylod machine followed by a faulty slim...:D )

If you take a backup and restore it to a different machine you'll lose any protected game saves, and some downloaded psn stuff, but there's not much you can do about the protected saves, and psn stuff is redownloadable from the store. You might have your albums for pictures / videos messed up too so you'd need to go through them again reassigning their album tags.

Obviously the data transfer utility is the best option but if you won't have the new one and the old one in the same room for a day the backup / restore does a pretty good job imho...
