    Hi,

For those who didn't see it, Sacha Baron Cohen did another "stunt", and is now likely to be permanently barred from all future Oscar ceremonies.

The "stunt" in question happened at about 12:20am GMT, and involved US TV anchorman Ryan Seacrest of "E! The Entertainment Network", and Baron Cohen dressed up as the lead from his latest film "The Dictator".

You can see what happened here...

That was pretty funny, the reporter took it in good spirits.

Sacha Baren Cohen is too well known in the US now to be able to shock people!

Haha that was pretty funny. Why would they ban him, that will be the most watched clip from this years Oscars by far!

    Hi Dannius,

The Academy had written to Baron Cohen's agent and himself, about a week ago, and stated that he would be barred from this year's ceremony if he attempted to pull any kind of stunt, like dressing-up as a "character", and causing chaos on the night of the ceremony. He was told he could attend, only if he kept to the Academy-directed black-suit-and-tie dresscode they request all male attendees adhere too.

Both Cohen and his agent, promised the Academy he would attend, according to their dresscode, and promised that nothing untoward would occur.

Lastly, the Academy was worried that with recent events in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Syria, certain sections of the global audience could be offended, if he turned-up mocking real-life tyrants and dictators, and so the Academy didn't want to take any risks.

Clearly, Baron Cohen had other ideas.

The Academy has also put in new regulations to ALL attendees, that any extraneous promotion of films, by cast or crew, is not acceptable on the afternoon and night of the event itself. This is to stop the Oscars being hijacked by PR companies for free publicity for works that may have nothing to do with the Oscars or mainstream cinema in general (e.g. low-budget or no-budget indie companies), such as the type that usually takes place at Cannes by companies working in the pornographic and more exploitative end of the cinema industry.

I suspect that the Academy will probably now ban him outright, seeing as he deliberately lied to them, and defied their specific requests.

I think he was well aware that there were a ton of cameras on him but I suspect he was fuming. That suit probably cost a fortune (although I'm sure he didn't pay) and also he has to stand there all bight interviewing the biggest celebs in the business so they would have had to get him a replacement.

Seacrest is actually a pretty big name himself, he produces a lot of the reality show drivel etc.

thought it was funny myself, can't understand why the academy is so uptight about it. writing to him and/or his agent informing him he would be banned if he tried anything would be like telling ricky gervais he could host an awards ceremony as long as he doesn't cut below the surface.

I think they should have just told him to stay away to be honest. there are certain people of whom you know what to expect, gervais and cohen are in that category. I can't believe the organisers issued any such warning and actually expected him to go along.

If I was cynical I would suggest it was because they wanted to take full advantage of the extensive publicity that would almost inevitably occur as a result.

    Looks like it worked :D

Well, in theory, if Cohen had just turned-up, done interviews, and not performed the actual "urn" stunt, he may well have been let-go without any problems. The issue, was probably not the outift in and of itself, nor even the ladies skimpy outfits, but what Cohen was likely to do, so the Academy was just trying to pre-empt anything that may potentially backfire or have fallout on them.

If I were Seacrest, I don't think I'd have been too pleased to have had my suit ruined by some joker right at the start of a five- or six-hour live, global event being watched by some 30-odd million people, no matter how funny or humourous the intent was.

But as Dr Phil rightly points out, on live TV, there was little Seacrest could've done, without getting himself into trouble (e.g. swearing at or pushing Baron Cohen away). He simply had to stand there, and hope that other interviewees would forgive his appearance.

The Chinese lady and gent that appear to the far left of the video clip, were foreign TV journalists, from Mainland China, and the lady didn't take too kindly to Baron Cohen's stunt, as some of the "ashes" went on her dress also.

Maybe it was to be expected, but if someone assures you they won't act up, you'd like to think that they would adhere to their promise. If not because they've made a promise, but because they are supposedly mature, intelligent adults. I'd like to think the Academy don't want to bar anyone from appearing at the Oscars, providing they are their legitimately.

But some people will do anything for publicity. I think that says more about any perceived potential quality of Baron Cohen's film, and any perceived talent of himself, than anything the Academy may have asked of him.

I'd be more annoyed as Seacrest if his career didnt get a rocket up it out of it, any publicity is good publicity to a certain degree. At the red carpets and the host to be the most talked about thing is unheard of, so for a bit of a dirty suit to get that kind of promotion is nothing but a good thing for him.

    Chox,

In theory, what you say is true, but Ryan Seacrest is the US equivalent of a poor-man's Jonathan Ross, so he wouldn't need any publicity to boost his career, as he's got his fingers in so many media-pots across the country, that he could do a dump on the red carpet, and someone would've told him what a great PR move that was. :D

it's a win win win for Cohen/the Academy/Seacrest ... just like the Golden Globes the organisers might feign outrage or have strict conditions, but they are secretly hoping for stunts like this
    - they might well all have been in on the stunt (just like the staged Bruno/Eminem 'incident' a few years ago)

they're not going to ban him

Superb  SBC couldn't have picked a better target to pull that stunt on. Ryan Seacreast is so far up himself it must be permanently dark in his world

Perhaps I'm losing my sense of humour or (more likely) I just don't get Baron-Cohen. Anyhow, not funny as far as I can make out.

the one a few others are referring to ... it was a Music industry awards show (one of the Grammys or MTV Awards iirc) - SBC's character Bruno is hanging from the theatre ceiling dressed as a winged angel and then has a malfunction and crash lands on Eminem, his virtually bare buttocks right on his face - Eminem then swears and storms out

the whole thing was staged and scripted, Emimen was in on the whole thing

Eminem was in on the stunt hence why he stormed off, making it quite believable imo.

Sod what the academy thinks about the stunt, and sod Seacrest too - aww diddums, so his suit (probably) got ashed, so what?

I look forward to this Dictator movie, should be fun, as all SBC stuff is.
