Project ‘Alien' Prequel now becomes original sci-fi film called - ‘Prometheus'!!!

Fox officially announced the new Ridley Scott production as Prometheus is now bound for worldwide release on March 9th, 2012.

The film once meant to be an Alien prequel has become something “more original,” and that the Jon Spaihts draft that kicked things off has been reworked by Damon Lindelof and Ridley Scott into Prometheus.

Of the five major roles to be cast, Noomi Rapace is the first actor signed to star (as "Elizabeth Shaw"), and we hear that Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are both circling the other big female lead ("Vickers").

Whether the Alien Prequel story is picked up again in the future by the studio is unknown. Im excited about a new Ridley Scott sci-fi film, but at the same time really wanted to see what he would have done with Alien.

Why, was he originally working on a Robin Hood prequel?

maybe part referring to the film when it was called Nottingham and Crowe was to play dual characters, Robin and the Sheriff, but Scott later changed the story.

Yep and as daft as it sounded, it hopefully would have been more interesting than that Robin Hood pish.

Disappointed Scott is no longer taking the Alien prequels forward.

So will this be set in the "Alien" universe? It's not clear.

I'm disappointed but also excited. In fact I'm not really sure how I feel right now, I need to go and lie down...

Well HR Giger is still involved with this new film, maybe this could be the start of something new.

The alien franchise was somewhat disappointing with the AVP films, though alien 3&4 were not bad, having Scott going back to the prequels might have been great.

If Scott, Higer and the writers feel they have something new and exciting on their hands im all for it, they say there will be some 'alien' connection, they probably just have Weyland-Yutani Corporation somewhere.

As for not doing the full blown alien prequels, was it they just could not get the script to work...

Sounds like something we haven't been told intervened - a law suit ?! - and they decided they'd spent too much developing the thing so changed a few names etc and came up with a new Monster. David Giler did say on the 2002/3 Alien 3 making-of feature that it would be good to get Ridley back on board and go back to the Alien planet which is what I thought we were getting here. Maybe not.

"The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak"

This is an intriguing comment and possibly a clue. I think genetic engineering will play a big part in this story.

Ridley has previously talked about 'gods and engineers'

From Wiki: In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a Titan ... He was a champion of mankind, known for his wily intelligence, who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals ... His myth has been treated by a number of ancient sources, in which Prometheus is credited with – or blamed for – playing a pivotal role in the early history of mankind.

My feeling is that they are dealing with such big themes that it would have been almost trivial to have Xenomorphs chasing people down, hence the separation from the franchise. With HR Giger on board and the fact that this all stems from a prequel project implies that it will still be in the Alien universe, so that would technically make it a sidequel. ?

Would the film still focus on the space jockey race and their creation of bio-weapons and as such no "aliens" as such appear in the film? Maybe we see some eggs at the end only? Clearly humans are in the film from the casting though ? I'm not sure how that would relate? If Giger is involved ? then I'm cautiously optimisitic but otherwise it could go either way really. My reasoning for the change in title must be that no aliens appear in the film and hence to call it an alien film would mislead the public and cause disappointment even if it is about the creation of aliens as a bio weapon ?

I think that the cryptical message is that this movie is the prequel to Alien, but only in the fact that it resolves around the same Universe that Alien was created in. So a film called Human shown on another planet could have a human army landing on the planet and killing aliens. The prequel could be anything to do with Earth.. selling burgers in Mc Donalds.. anything.

i don't think it's wise of them to talk like this already, the quotes by scott and lindelof are creating expectations and they're not even filming yet.
I don't think it's very promising either that they're bouncing form pre to side to new and original
They should go to work first and talk later...

That's pretty much how I see it. If the story touches on the origins of the Space Jockey/Xenomorph even only slightly then it will still technically be an Alien prequel.

Well personally I hope this film has moved away from the Alien franchise entirely. It is bad enough we had to have the dubious Alien Resurrection before things got really bad with AvP2 (I am a massive fan of Alien and Aliens but can't stomach more than 30mins of this film). Fox should let the franchise go.

The film will feature Xenomorphs after all...

(Though officially unconfirmed at this point, so don't get to excited just yet)

    According to Sky Movie sources;

It turns out that Ridley Scott's recent comments that Prometheus would be a departure from the Aliens series are somewhat misleading.

Sounds excellent - seems to confirm my belief its all about the space jockey race and its creation of the aliens as bio genetic weapons which get out of control and possibly destroy their creator race.....Promethues - fire (ie the aliens) from the gods (the space jockeys) - all seems to hang together ?

'the familiar HR Giger-style aliens do appear. Big ones apparently'

could mean anything, not necessarily Xenomorphs.

Well it all justs sounds so exciting - a film about a type of aliens we knowing nothing about being wiped out by the aliens - I am just on the edge of my seat to know their fate

I doubt that Noomi Rapace is playing a space jokey alien or that the main focus of the film will be a conflict between the space jokey race and the xenomorphs. That would be the mythology which has been referred to. ;)

Who are these 'Space Jokeys' Todd? And just how funny are they?

Anyway this all still sounds bloody awful. Explaining away all the mystery of the series is not a good idea even if it is Ridley Scott.

Make something new in the Sci-fi world instead.
