Over the past week I've tried to download a couple of things some friends have uploaded, but I'm always being told my I.P is already downloading a file.

I'm not downloading anything and I haven't been able to download for possibly a week, possibly a bit longer. Recently there were some issues with the provider, I couldn't get on the internet twice over the past two or three weeks so it may be because of that.

I did a clean up before and tried to download, and I managed to download one file. However after one download, I have to do a second clean up and restart my computer before I can download another.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? I thought it might be because I hit Free twice, like I have done before but I've never had an issue like that last this long.

I would try get a premium account but I can't afford it right now, if at all already having a couple current subscriptions and other things I have to pay off.

Any help with this would be great. I don't use it often, but it is frustrating to know that I can't currently download anything.

I had the same problem when trying to download a particular file. I think it was a bad uplink because even now I still get the same message, however if i try a different link for a different file I go straight to it without any problems.

    Try downloading a different file

I have not had any problems since.................

Unfortunately the link didn't work. I'll see if they can use a different site, though I'd love to work out why I'm having problems with Rapidshare. I hate that I can't use a website that I should be able to use, but there doesn't seem to be any way to fix it.

I've tried a couple of files now and it's the same with them all. It tells me I'm downloading when I'm not downloading anything. I had read somewhere it could be because someone else is using your connection? Though I can't imagine that would be it?

    It's getting pretty frustrating, though.

Try a download manager like JDownloader. Add your links to that and if it gets the opportunity to download, it will.

Used to change my MAC on the o2 box which reassigned a new external IP - maybe powering off your modem for a bit will grab a new IP and solve the problem?

Sorry that this reply is months later, but the weirdest thing is happening. My old computer worked with RapidShare. Around the start of the year, maybe a bit in I got a better, newer computer (actually could have been the end of last year) and RapidShare stopped working.

I got another new computer recently (someone I know built one, and gave me their old one) and RapidShare works again. Weird. I have no idea why my old computer had issues with RapidShare.

It is quite likely that at least some of the previous problems you've experienced using Rapidshare are down to Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) content filtering, which is implemented by most major UK ISPs.

When a site contains content judged to be unlawful by the IWF (child porn and the like, rather than mere copyright infringement) all traffic to that site's IP address gets routed via your ISP's IWF proxy, which inspects the actual URL requested, blocks any requests for banned content URLs, and forwards the rest to the site. This continues until the banned content is removed.

One of the side effects of IWF filtering is that the filtered site only sees the IP address of the ISP's IWF proxy, rather than the individual IP addresses of each of the ISP's customers, which when it effects them, results in rapidshare blocking multiple users connected via the same proxy.

This happens pretty frequently on several ISPs including mine, and there is an effective workaround (use a non-UK rapidshare IP address, by adding it to your host file) UPDATE5 UK BT Broadband ISP Customers Blocked from Rapidshare − ISPreview UK

However, I seem to recall reading that Virgin had taken some measures to reduce the problem, such as having more proxies.
