The reason the Oppo is the player to beat is beacause of the firmware. Any 'modification' and change comes with a significant heath warning which is why the majority of us prefer the hardware mod. A great Oppo is a firmware thing, not hardware.

Q: Which model have the best SQ from the analouge output for two-channel cd-playback and dvd-audio, OPPO DV-983H or BDP-83 (standard model) ?

Is anyone else finding the Oppo doesn't re-encode all TrueHD & LPCM tracks to DTS ?

    With secondary audio ON...

Men In Black (US) re-encodes TrueHD
Fifth Element (US) re-encodes both TrueHD & LPCM
Black Hawk Down (UK) re-encodes both DD & LPCM
Kill Bill Vol 1 (US) re-encodes both DD & LPCM
Cloverfield (US) no audio for top menu and movie unless I power off the Arcam and on again then it re-encodes TrueHD
No Country (US) re-encodes both DD & LPCM
Terminator (US) re-encodes both DD & LPCM
Underworld (US) re-encodes both DD & LPCM
Apocalypto (US) re-encodes both DD & LPCM
I Am Legend (US) doesn't re-encode either DD or TrueHD
Blood Diamond (US) doesn't re-encode either DD or LPCM
Troy (US) doesn't re-encode either DD or LPCM
Twister (US) doesn't re-encode either DD or TrueHD
Tango & Cash (US) doesn't re-encode either DD or TrueHD
Eraser (US) doesn't re-encode either DD or TrueHD
    The Firm 09' (UK) doesn't re-encode TrueHD

Dark Knight (US) re-encodes both DD & TrueHD
Matrix (UK) re-encodes both DD & TrueHD
Clone Wars (US) re-encodes both DD & TrueHD

Note the last 10 are Warner titles and 7 do not re-encode  Is it something they are doing to the disk to prevent it ?

I don't see why on some films it re-encodes some Dolby Digital tracks to DTS but on other disks it doesn't re-encode the DD, TrueHD or LPCM tracks

I’m tempted to go for the oppo-83 but I need to ask owners a quick question. Is it quiet while playing dvd?

My current panna bd player makes an annoying high pitch sound while spinning dvd discs. Bd are fine but dvd always make that sound. I’ve tried other panna players, same model and otherwise, all with the same sound. It must be how bd players are with dvd? Two Sony models made an annoying purring noise.

The oppo seems to tick all the boxes, plus it’s region free for bd so I can pick up criterion discs. On the other hand it’s a lot of money to spend on a bd player, if it does the job quietly I’d prob go for it.

I have been very happy with this player, it has played everything i have thrown at it.... until now!!
we hired the film "Surrogates" from love film, and although it plays the disc, it keeps freezing and has sound drop outs!!! The player has the latest firmware, and the disc is clean!!
Has anyone else had a problem with this disc?. any help would be most appreciated.

Glad to hear the fan is quiet but I wonder how the disc drive is spinning dvd?

Other bd players I've tried, while fine with bd, made that annoying high pitch sound with dvd

I have an Arcam AVR350 amp.

I am still plugging away with an Arcam DV137 -
for DVD & CD via coaxial and
for occasional multichannel SACD & DVD-A use via analogues.

    For blu-ray I use a Samsung 1500 (DTS re-encode) via coaxial.

    1. If I was to replace both these players with an Oppo BDP-83 (or SE), what would I gain in terms of sound quality?

    2. How good is the analogue audio for Blu-Ray?
    3. Is it better than DTS-Rencode?

    4. How good is the analogue audio for multichannel music?

I would be particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has upgraded Arcam DV137 or 139 to Oppo and still uses an Arcam AVR350 or 300. What is better with Oppo and what isnt?

    Thanks
    David

David, it depends on where and how you do the bass management if you need to (and most do).

At the moment I have Bass Management on the Arcam DV137 set up for multihannel analogue out
and Bass Management on the Arcam AVR350 set up for digital coaxial (for DVD, CD & Blu-Ray)

wrt to the DTS reencode and the bass management on the receiver, then this works really well on the 350 as it is great at extracting the info at the receiver end and is quakity kit. The Samsung does a good job here as well.

The Arcam has good analogue out. I don't think the basic Oppos are quite as good, it is afterall a 500 vs 1250 pound comparison here. If I I listen to just 2 channel with no bass management then I find the Oppo pretty close to the premium Arcam kit, however for multi channel then the Oppo just doesn't have the necessay tools and so prefer the digital connection. DVD is much better on the Oppo (due to the MPEG2 decoding chip)however and it has various other tricks up it's sleeve also. The problem here is the Arcam is a quality piece of kit. You would gain MR convenience of a single do all player :D but don't expect miracles, you are starting from a good base.

You may wish to double check the Oppo thread on DTS re-encode. The Oppo does seem to have restrictions.
