Hmmm, Steven "summer blockbuster" Spielberg + Will "family friendly action hero" Smith making an edgy, brutally violent movie dealing with some very dark issues :rotfl:

The only upside to this is that it should increase awareness of the excellent Korean original and hopefully attract some more people to Asian cinema.

Will Smith's recent films have been turd.

    Shark Tale
    Hitch
    Pursuit of Happyness
    I am Legend
    Hancock

Over sentimental or over thoughtful or just plain old dross.

Not sure if Steven S will actually direct this, this is way too dark for him, as suggested, if he does direct can what is the chance he will not touch the whole relationship angle with a ten foot Jewish pole :D

    Hollywood does 'originality' once again.

This could be one of the biggest cock-up's ever commited to celluloid.

Can take or leave Spielberg (definatley leave on this one) and hate Will Smith.

The original was a superb movie, but please leave the hell alone!

Only remake I can just about cope with is Departed but still enjoy 'Infernal affairs' more...

I don't see how Will Smith fits into Oldboy's shoes. You need someone more like Christian Bale.

No, I just want the original film to be left alone!

I'm generally a fan of Spielberg - he has made some of the finest crafted pieces of popular entertainment in the past 3 decades - and I think Will Smith has proved that if cast in the right role and he puts his mind to it, he is capable of turning in a very good performance.

But this idea is just so wrong and these two people are just so bizarre to be mentioned in connection with such a project, the mind literally boggles!!!

You can bet they will bottle the ending, it's a little too twisted for hollywood although I'm looking forward to seeing Will smith eat a live octopus.

Agreed. Leave the classic Oldboy alone. Its fine as it is. :)

It would be like trying to remake Goodfellas.

A remake was originally planned with Gary Oldman who I could see in the role, but thankfully that was canned.

But Spielberg and Will Smith, I'm lost for words, just don't , seriously.

But he won't be eating an octopus, will he, as it'll be set in the US?
He'll probably fall unconcious eating a bowl of beef jerky!
    Bad idea:mad:

Occasionally remakes are good. More often they're awful.

The good ones tend to take a different view of the material, or come along many years later when the public taste has changed in a way that's more receptive to the film's message.

None of that fits with OldBoy, and I see nothing in any of SS's or WS's work that suggests they could bring anything new to a remake of this film.

Given the tastes of Hollywood, Spielberg and Smith, the subject matter would be toned down, which completely destroys the very core of the film.

I might be wrong, but that's my guess, based on the information in front of me.

When I heard the news originally I thought it was a joke, but it seems the wheels are turning for this. But it seems this will not be a remake of the film, more an adaptation of the original manga comics, which I have no idea what they are like. Gasp!!!. But it seems the spielberg machine, will be generating a lot of attention for this from the public, as most feel it will be a remake of the film.

But it still seems to be a strange combination, Spielberg and Will Smith for a manga Oldboy re-imagination.
