I am thinking of having my gas meter moved to the outside of the house as it's quite ugly.

Has anybody had their meter re-located? and how much did it cost.

I have heard this can be as much as £700.

I think ours was around the £500 mark when we had it moved due to an extension being built. It partly depends on how far it is being moved, and they send you a form that allows you to calculate the cost (based on your own measurements) prior to arranging the work. You also have to arrange for the necessary trenches and new meter box to be fitted yourself.

Getting the electricity meter moved was a similar exercise in being shafted for very little work.

Couldnt you just cover it up ie box it in?

We want it moved directly outside where it is situated at the moment, so about a the depth of a cavity wall.

And you are right 'Shafted' is the appropriate word.

It is situated in a small alcove where our washing machine is, about 100 cm wide so it would be impossible to box it in mate.

Well you have nothing to lose by asking them for a quote form to calculate the cost. There is a minimum charge though, only part of the cost is dependent on the distance moved. And you would need to allow for the cost of having an outside meter box fitted into the wall. And of course reconnecting the inside gas pipe to the moved meter.

Yes its £6/700 minimum and a lenghty wait for it to be moved I'm afraid.
