Doesn't play avi files! You'll need to convert them to MPEG1.

File size will definitely be a little bigger. You can keep the original quality by specifying when re-encoding.

Sorry I don't know. Try Googling for media converter.

AVI is a container format. Your video inside might actually be MPEG 1 or 2 already. In that case you could find a tool to change the container format into something your Sony accepts (e.g. .mpg or .vob) without re-encoding the video and hence no quality loss.
    Try
Tools - Video software and downloads - VideoHelp.com
    for free tools.

Only recently got round to converting a file from AVI to a much poorer quality MPEG1 file format. Was not impressed at all ! i cant believe sony havent updated their firmware to allow a number of different file formats to be used, my external WD media player is 10 times better.

Should of bought the Samsung !

Did you try to convert to a MPEG2? I have got a 40W5500 and can play MPEG2 format in perfect quality (e.g. a DVB-S recording or a DVD VOB file). The Sony is only struggling in principle with any MPEG4 format as I think it cannot decode H.264.

i tried MPEG2 1st off as that was recommended however it didnt seem to like it. Will have another go. Could possibly need a firmware update which can be DL from Sony's website (i think a new version is about to be issued as the current link is inactive).

Why do they make these things so difficult !
