I wonder if anyone can recommend any Websites that offer music downloads in flac format (free, or pay to download).
I have finished ripping my existing CD collection and find it a bit wasteful buying a CD just to rip it then put in storage and forget about it.
I note that Linn have better than CD quality downloads available on their website but at 18 quid a shot I consider the price a bit steep (but that is Linn) also I am looking for more main stream music.
I have tried Google but to no avail.
Perhaps I am a bit ahead of the game, perhaps I haven't looked hard enough or perhaps people are happy to put up with average sound quality?
I would appreciate any assistance.

The most recent Nine Inch Nail's album is available in various hi-res formats, inc FLAC & 24/96 WAV. Not really a fan, but was intrigued since it is free.

Not really mainstream but Boomkat - Your independent music specialist are a great site for electronica and dub type stuff and do most of their downloads in either MP3(320kbps 44kHz) and/or FLAC at quite good prices. :smashin:

I gave up looking but have resigned myself to sourcing the CD cheap, ripping to FLAC, converting to mp3 and chucking it in the loft

Have a look at the Download Site thread; some of them are doing lossless.

The classical label Gimell (Tallis Scholars and others) release some recordings as FLAC, and some as 'Studio Master Pro' FLACs (24/88.2).

Thanks for the info; I am beginning to resign myself also.

I did download a sample album from hdtracks.com but have not really had time to listen properly, seems very good though. The site is in the US and won't accept UK credit cards but Paypal apparently works, haven't tried it though.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that more sites will stock flac it is encouraging that Linn are.

Maybe we should think about what it would be like to leave our kids or Grandchildren a FLAC/MP3 Music collection as opposed to the Physical CD's and Vinyl. I'm certainly glad to have my old mans 78's and a Record player to play them on. Even though I have to wind it up
Just not sure we will be able to play CD's in 60 years time or even FLAC files come to that. Everything seems so transient these days

Oops, Just realised I'm getting old and grumpy :D

I also found HD Tracks and have downloaded some country/bluegrass in FLAC. Although the site says it doesn't sell to users outside the US, I registered with AMEX card for payment and have had no problems downloading so far. Quality of the files is excellent. Can't understand why anyone pays extortionate prices to Apple for low quality MP3 music downloaded through iTunes.

Just a suggestion, dont laugh.
The B&W Music club is 30quid for 12 albums (1 download a month flac/alac).
Its far from mainstream music but I havent been totally disappointed every month.
Its lossless straight from Dave Stewarts studio.

My background is Hiphop and house, but I can appreciate these quality downloads in different genres even if they are not to my normal taste in music.
Crank it up and get lost in sensational sounds.

I downloaded the first three free samples - production quality is very high ...

You mean Peter Gabriel's studio ;)

I'd recommend the B&W club as an excellent and low-cost way of discovering new high-quality music. In addition to the regular albums there are various bonus downloads through the year.

I do indeed :D

I was downloading Dave Stewarts song book sample at the time and got all confusald.

Varous live concerts at Internet Archive

Use the media search and explore.
Some tracks are only available in FLAC (others are Ogg Vorbis , MP3 etc.)
