    Ello,

Well the time has come to put the final part in place, for now! I have a aging panny ax100 i would like to replace, what suggestions do you have? I am out of touch with pj's so be gentle!
Viewing distance is about 16ft and the room is 13 ft wide?

Budget? Not a vast fortune could probably get to 2k?

Are there any JVC X3s still around as that might be just about in budget? Failing that the 2D only Panasonic AT1000 (check model number) is around £2k IIRC.

I had an AE1000 and my HD350 is miles ahead of the picture quality it gave, so going from an AX100 is a similar (bar the resolution) position, so you should notice a big improvement on either of the above I reckon. That way you'll be good to last a few years without wanting to upgrade again.

I also will help if your room isn't a plain white/magnolia box, but to be fair if it is, there probably isn't much you can do about it I guess. If you can then you may get a considerable improvement just by improving the room...combine that with a PJ upgrade and the PQ will move on in leaps and bounds.

I don't know: 3D gave me a spliting headache at the JVC X3/7 launch in 2010, so I've not bothered since. I wouldn't want to test it out on an eplileptic though.

Keith, do you have to keep reminding me how cheap HD350s have got these days? :D That's £500 a year in depreciation now mine's 3 years old (must be due it's first MOT :)). Have to agree though for that money with a warranty you could do a lot worse and a HD350 is just as flexible to position as the AX100.

However, if you do find an X3 in budget even not using the 3D side (maybe sell on the glasses if it helps budget?) it is closer in PQ terms to the HD750 so a worthwhile improvement over the HD350. Also the colours aren't as oversaturated on the X3 either, so less need for an external CMS like I bought. I chose the HD350 when the HD750 was £2k more, but for £500 or so more I think I would have got one, but it's your money/your choice.

Off to watch a film now...haven't used mine in a while. I'll probably nod off during it though as I was up early: I was like a kid at Christmas as I bought myself a weekend toy today in the form of a 3.0 BMW Z3 roadster rather than upgrade my PJ. :)

Double check that it's a HD750 clone and not the older HD100 as that might not be such a good deal (not a bad projector though, just the HD750 had a CMS/THX mode which would get you close out of the box). If you're right that's only £300-400 more than a used HD350 so worth the extra IMHO. In percentage terms it's still about the same as the difference when new.

Anyway, off to watch 'The Eagle'...hope it's good or I'll be snoring. :D

    Yep!
My x3 is in the classifieds this morning- £1650 so well under budget.
Oh, and it's white so even though Kelvin has bought a car, I've a feeling a white x3 would go down quite well with SWMBO ;)

    Tempted topmetom or kelvin?

I'm in the same position Tom - virtually certain I'm going to replace my ax100 with an Epson TW9000. The only thing holding me back is that I'm still happy with the image my ax100 gives, especially after I replaced my old manual white screen with a grey tab tensioned electric one. I'm still on my first bulb which has less than 1000 hours watch time, so still performing well, although I'm sure there'd be no comparison putting the ax100 and 9000 side by side

Sounds a good deal, but SWMBO has been very patient waiting for me to get back on with redoing our main bedroom (it was interupted by the search for the car), so further funds are needed for that project. :)

I gave in to my inner voices in the end and replaced my ax100 with the Epson 9000. Have to say that even though I was happy with the ax100's picture I'm gobsmacked by the improvement the Epson has given. It really is a night and day comparison. Can't bring myself to sell the ax100 though so its back in its original box and up in the loft with my original screen - sure I'll find a use for them one day!! (or not!!)

The 9000 is that top of epson range? How would that compare with a jvc/sony?

The Epson is a bright projector and thus very good for 3D. The JVC is less bright, but very good at 2d. The Sony falls somewhere in the middle.

If you fancy a demo of the X30 and the TW9000 you know where we are;) We don't offer credit but there are some very good credit card deals about:)

Seriously (and I hope I don't come across as a :lesson: here) why not just buy a used model from the classifieds if you haven't the cash to buy a new one? No one needs to get in debt just to buy a projector, the world won't stop if you don't have one and the light nights are here, so you'll be using it less anyway.

If your circumstances change and you need to sell it a new PJ will lose upto half it's value as soon as you take it home, especially if it's an end of line model.

I saw your concerns about epilepsy. That is as good a reason to stay away from 3d:) If you go new most will be 3d capable projectors though.

There are some good bargains that come up second hand though depending on your budget.

My only thought is could DLP be a concern for epilepsy. Some people report issues with DLP including headaches. Could that be epilepsy inducing, I don't know.
