Can't say definitively if it has a digital out, however I have just installed an Alpine headunit and iPod thingy in my wife's car, and the Alpine headunit can read and display tags. Suspect some sort of digital data transfer in there...

The dock connection has been updated to allow control from other devices, mostly for car integration, but it's still only analog audio out :(

Suspect it's some limitation in the iPod w.r.t transcoding on the fly - it would have to translate whatever you've encoded your music as to PCM before outputting it digitally, and it probabaly doesn't have the spare cycles for that kind of thing (wild guess - can't back that up in any way :)

U might want to check out the iRiver H140/H120. It has digital optical out. Mine sounds fab through my Hi-Fi even without using the optical.
