As above, apart from the motion blur (which I have yet to determine the cause of), can't fault the set, especially for the price
When is it being delivered Adam? Would like to hear your review. Thanks
Apologies for the delay and please bear with me as this is my first plasma TV, only my 2nd HD TV so forgive my naivety!
Firstly the screen is quite reflective (as with all plasmas), and as such needs to be viewed with curtains closed preferably at night. Anyone reading this will no doubt know this already. The external design is great, it's one of the main reasons I chose this over the Samsung 5000 which is £50 more. It sits fairy low rather than standing on top of a large 4-pronged base which means it is at a better eye-level on my TV stand.
I've gone through the basic calibration with Spears & Munsil v2 twice since the weekend, so not sure what difference it has made but the colours and blacks look great. This is compared to my 5 year old mid-rang Philips LCD so is probably not a great review in terms of other plasma TVs... The opening credits for Casino Royale (BR) looked fantastic, colours were vibrant but not overpowering and the blacks looked very black.
My only quibble is the apparent motion blur which is visible on panning scenes and with any fast on-screen movement. Turning on the 'TruMotion' makes it smoother but blurs the edges of the moving object so is not really a solution. I opted for plasma for the better colours, blacks and supposed blur-free motion. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for a new plasma or if I should be expecting more from the TV? I'm not sure if I've set my standards too high for a £1k 60" TV, as I understood it was an inherent property of plasma displays to give (almost) blur-free viewing, and this to me seems quite frequent. I have read that it can be caused by phosphor lag initially until the screen is run in, but by that point I will be out of my 7 day return period...
The smart functions are fairly standard, having used a PS3 previously the BBC iplayer app and similar is much the same. I haven't been able to get a good enough reception with my ariel to test the TV receiver (same with old TV, maybe non-digi ariel?), need to extend my sat cable to test the freesatHD...
Response times on menus are infinitely better than my previous Philips, which was notably bad. Also there are professional calibration settings available for anyone who has the know-how to calibrate the TV properly.
I noticed when watching some films that when there is no picture output to the screen the panel turns off completely, which enhances the look of the black (obviously). The issue comes when the image flicks between a blank image and a blank image with something small in the middle (credits for example), and the screen acts as if it is flickering on and off. Sometimes this effect works well, i.e. between scenes there is no light output from the panel, but you notice it on the end credits etc. There may be a setting to turn this off but I haven't found it yet.
If it wasn't for the motion blur I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this TV, but I'm hoping for some feedback from some more experienced plasma users as to whether this is normal or not... maybe I am particularly susceptible to it?
If anyone has any specific questions let me know and I will answer as best I can!
Right in terms of ghosting/motion blur etc. What you need to do is set picture mode to game, tweak the the colours to your liking, disable (completely OFF!);
- trumotion
- noise filter
- noise reduction
- MPEG Noise Reduction
- Eye Care
- Motion Eye Care
Thanks. Any reason why I should select 'game' and not 'standard'/'ISF Calibrated' with the same settings & all the image processing disabled?
I agree no channel order in freesat My Humax freesat just enter your postcode give you the channels for your own reagionYes freesat HD is built in. Although it doesn't order the channels in any meaningful way, nor does it filter our all the ones which require subscription... which makes channel hopping pointless :-/
On a plus note, the USB interface will play .mkv files and output DTS via optical lead to your AVR (if this wasn't known before?)
