I definitely prefer to buy in FLAC. Why buy lossy mp3 when space is not really an issue any more? If I can't buy in FLAC then I will buy the CD and rip to FLAC using Exact Audio Copy. Then I will fix the artwork with bliss. Sorted and ready to play on my Squeezebox Touch!

See my thread on buying music in FLAC and please add links to good music! http://www.avforums.com/forums/music/1509400-great-music-flac-wav-where-buy.html

(Moved to this thread from the thread below by mod)
    http://www.avforums.com/forums/streamers-network-music-players/1651763-nas-windows-9-2-lossless.html

The file type is wma though not 9.2 and wma-l is lossless (windows media audio-lossless) which he is comparing to flac (free lossless audio codec).

I have seen some people say they hear differences between flac and wav, I use wma-l myself and couldn't pick out a difference between it and wav or flac but if you can then I would use the one you prefer.

FLAC is losseless and supports tags so suits me fine.
    CDex handles everything for me.

But if you cannot hear the difference yourself then why would you forgo the technical advantages of flac (comprehensive tagging, smaller filesize) over wav just because someone with different ears has a different perception?

The comment relates to a different thread.
    http://www.avforums.com/forums/streamers-network-music-players/1651763-nas-windows-9-2-lossless.html

I have no idea why it was moved here. To answer your question though they shouldn't - they should use whatever they prefer that suits their usage. I use a mixture of file formats including flac and wav but the majority are wma-l, I have no particular preference and use whatever I feel like using when ripping CDs. My comment was not meant for this thread.

Hi, I loaded my Dire Straits Brothers in Arms (SACD) into the cd tray and started up EAC but the data base only came back with a standard Brothers in Arms CD, not a SACD, so I went a long with that.
After ripping the Stereo layer of the (SACD) I thought it was ok as it says at the end of the logfile
"All tracks accurately ripped, No errors occurred, End of status report.
But after that at the bottom it says "You can use CUETools to repair this rip".
What does this mean ? repair the rip with cuetools, when I thought that the rip had been accurately ripped.
    I Would appreciate an explanation
    Here is the logfile

Oh ok. The ripped sacd does sound great, its a lot better than the remaster cd that is out. So I guess if it says
All tracks accurately ripped I will leave it at that.

Theres nothing to worry about here really ,

    This first part ,

It sees a problem with the TOCID , thats the Table of Contents , which , seeing as your comparing the SACD to a Standard CD , is to be expected.

The numbers after "Differs in 19 samples" are roughly the start times of each track , which are slightly different on the SACD , again this is to be expected.

Other than that , your rip is fine.

It is very often the case that people just use the database entry for track names and don't concern themselves with whether or not the entry they are using is ripped from the same master/pressing.

As such , a lot of the data in the accurate rip database is incorrect. Especially with titles like this that have so many different releases.

That is usually OK so long as no features are enabled in the ripping software that will actually act on that incorrect data to modify your rip.

As you can see from the confidence figures , you are not the first person to rip the SACD CD layer using the database entry from the standard CD.

Incidentally , I have that same SACD , and I get the same CRC's as you , I always "test and copy" , so I have the same CRC's twice.

Thanks for your replies. It is very true that there is so many versions of cds nowadays especially with all these remasters coming out. Hopefully my ripped cds are ok, they have "All tracks accurately ripped" in the logfile.

There is no point in ripping a CD higher than 16/44 FLAC as it will not give any better sound. Ripping in this format will give sound quality equal to the original CD.

It only matters for 2 reasons really, 1 is space as they'll take up more room. The other is whether your player can handle the format. For example Sonos can't play back 24bit codecs.

Btw Martin, have read of the sticky in this section about ripping cds. It helped me no end. It's a big job that you really only want to do once.

Also backup, backup, back up! My method is to rip to my pc, and use synctoy to copy to my Nas and an external harddrive. Then I keep the hdd at work and just bring it home when I have lots of new albums.

I not heard the arcam so I can't really comment but the rdac is a very good dac for the money. I had one for a couple of years and it has served me well. Very simple to use, minimal controls and it made a massive difference to my system at the time.

I have since upgraded to the audiolab mdac which I'm very happy with too. But it's a different sort of dac really. It needs configuring to get the best out of it, but you do get a lot more choice and features. Plus the support you get from the designer John Westlake is the best I've come across in any product I've ever bought. Audio or not.

But it does cost twice as much as an rdac. Find a shop that sells your gear and test dacs for yourself. Or get a home demo if you can.

Apart from batch converting and multi core processing is there any other reason why I would want to purchase dBpoweramp over using the free EAC? I'm willing to make the investment if there is a reason to, like rip quality or something.

AFAIK, EAC has always been the benchmark for rip quality. If you've mastered EAC, I can't see any reason to change.

That's good to hear, I'm already 100 or so CD's into ripping a collection and just wanted to check I was using the right software! I've used the guides mentioned to set up EAC and I'm happy with the process I just wanted to check that I wasn't missing anything available in a paid for application. I'm also in no hurry so I'm ripping them as and when I have time so I'm not too bothered about speeding the process up which is what dBpoweramp seems to offer over EAC.

I think that the slower ripping that EAC does is better because you get better results rather than a high speed rip from dbpoweramp.

After thinking I had mastered EAC I've found a problem with some mix CD's showing as having gaps when they shouldn't. I've tried the different gap detection options but get the same results.
