    Hi

these two processors are similar in price. I would assume that the 2120 with a slightly faster clock speed is the one to go for.

However in another thread i was advised to go for the 2100 as the 2120 has been slightly under clocked.

I am looking at one for both a WHS 2011 motherboard as well as a HTPc. Both will use similar asus motherboards ASUS 1155 P8Z68-V

I'm confused, so in the tradition of 1980 exam questions. Discuss...

On the Intel comparison grid there seems to be very little between the 2 CPU's - Compare Intel® Products
    The only differences highlighted are:
    Clock speed 3.1 vs 3.3GHz
Bus core ratio 31 vs 33
Embedded options available only for the 2120

Do you really need an I3 ? how about one of the cheaper Pentium chips .. they are slightly slower but save you a few quid . They lack some of the I3 mainly Hyperthreading, but for pretty much everything else they are just slower clocked versions for quite a bit less money. Only dont go for the really really cheap one as thats single core, A g860 with 10% O/c might save you enough to get a better gfx card or an intel cache drive

No quicksync on the cheaper chip ....

The motherboard you have quoted as a choice is also total overkill for a HTPC. Yesterday, I purchased a Asus P8H81 m/board, for £49.99 from Novatech which a i3 2120 is now sat, for £74.99. Two sticks of G.Skill RipJaw 2 gb ram - 4 gig total finished it off. Total price £145.80

Thats the 1155 motherboard, i3 2120 & 4 gigs of decent ram for less than the cost of your chosen motherboard.

For a HTPC, you need no more than the above, and others would consider that too much!
