I'm upgrading my PC to run Photoshop CS4 but I have a pretty tight budget. Which CPU should I go for - AMD or Intel? I'm looking to use a motherboard upgrade package from Novatech and they have solutions based around the following CPUs:

    AMD
    Athlon X2 245
    Quad Core X4 Q9350E
    X4 630

    Intel
    Celeron E3200
    Pentium Dual Core E5400
    Dual Core E6600
    Core 2 Quad 8300

Of these which would be best? Do AMD CPUs still run hotter than Intel like for like?

    Thanks

In general the Athlon II X4 630 generally just edges ahead of the Q8300 with the old Phenom 1 X4 and the dual cores some way behind but looking at a few Photoshop benchmarks it does appear to be biased towards Intel's chips and the Q8#00 chips generally come out ahead of the Athlon II X4s there.

And yes, AMD have caught up on performance and idle power but their chips still draw up to twice the power of Intel equivalents under load and power in equals heat out: Dual-Core LGA1156 Processors: Core i5-661, Core i3-540 and Pentium G6950 CPUs Review (page 14) - X-bit labs
