Im a big fan of the Pioneer but it will set you back around £2500.
Its a lot of money but its a lot of TV.

Every time i see the samsung im still not convinced by it as a package. I think exterior build is poor, the sound is poor and the picture suffers (in my opinion) from a poor response and poor contrast.

Have you looked at the pana's?

50PZ81? Almost identical spec to the pz85 but with freesat.

Go and see your local specialist and ask to see a SD picture and compare for yourself though.

I am a big fan of Pioneer tv's. I have just paid £1524 dlivered for a 50" from Amazon. Wouldn't have any other make as they always get good reviews in the press.

Have you seen any reviews? The PS50A556 was in CNET Reviews and got a very low mark.
Havent seen any reviews for the more expensive A656.

Personally I think it's a tough call between the Samsung PS50a656 and the Panasonic TH50PZ80 or 81 (with freesat). So definitely choose one of them if you can't afford a pioneer which is a no brainer. This 50 plasma site reviews the Samsung and the PZ81. They seem to rate the Samsung higher. I guess if you have Sky HD already then there is no point getting the PZ81. Besides I haven't been to impressed by the HD on freesat compared to Sky but it's bound to be expected. The technology inside a Sky HD box, especially the newer ones is far better than any available freesat box or integrated freesat.

Let us know what you decide on in the end.

The problem with this review site is the lack of any detail in the reviews. I havent seen a detailed review of the Sammy 656 anywhere yet, wheras there are plenty for the Pannys.
The 556 hasnt had the greatest of reviews, but "50 Plasma" site have that above the Panny Z81???

rewerb is right regarding the 50PZ81. hdtvtest is one of the most reputed reviewers of HDTVs. They have given "Highly Recommended" tag for 50PZ81.http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-th50pz81b-review-20080729123.htm

Samsung was renowned to be the second best LCD TV manufacturer of all times. Unfortunately most of their energy and time dissipates into solving for their bugs. No offence but if you find the Samsung to be satisfying, stick with it.

I agree that the 50PZ81 is a great tv and let's face it... there is not much in it between either of these tvs. If you are lucky enough to be able to afford either of these you are going to be happy.

As for which one is better then I guess it depends on what your needs are. Perhaps they should have reviewed the PZ80 instead. I know they are pretty much identical except for the freesat built in, but this is also the PZ81's downfall in my opinion - for those who are serious about watching HD. At the moment the Sky HD boxes give a better HD picture.

I did see some SD on both the PZ81 and the Samsung 656 and I have to say I felt the panasonic did a better job of uprezzing. Although neither were brilliant but what do you expect at 50". For HD they were more on an equal par.
