Currently the best 50 inch plasma is the fujitsu.

The Pioneer PDP-507XD has a big following on these forums, though it's just above your budget.
My brother has one, great design and top picture to match.
You could wait until later this year when the price eventually might drop to around the £1500 mark.

How far away from the screen will you be sitting?

We upgraded from a 36'' Phillips CRT to the Pioneer 507XD and my ball and chain also thought that would be too big at first.

We are sitting 8 to 12 ft from the screen depending on where you sit and at those distances the 50'' screen is fine. Our living room is not small but it is not a barn either. I'd say that if you are much under 8ft that is too close for a 50'' screnn when watching SD pictures.

It is amazing how quickly you get used to the size of the screen - when we go to friends or relatives now and look at their 32'' they look tiny ......

Don't give up - she will see the light!

Then you are at a great distance to view HD sources on a good 50'' and will be fine with reasonable SD sources. You would be better a little further away for SD but 8ft is OK.

I think the rule of thumb is if in doubt and budget is not a factor always go for the bigger screen size (within reason). If you get a 42'' I guarantee you will be sat there thinking I wish I had gone for the 50 ......
