I tried to play MKV and M2TS 1080 resolution clips on the new iPad but the result was disappointing.

I used VLC (got it from iTunes ages ago), cinexplayer and Aceplayer - all of them struggled to churn out 1 frame per second.

I take it those apps aren't using hardware acceleration? Does AV Player HD use hardware acceleration?

AV Player HD only uses hardware acceleration for file types that are natively supported by iOS.

It supports 1080p through the built in Video app since it supports hardware decoding. Buzz etc. can only use hardware decoding for iTunes supported media - there is usually a setting to enable this. Any other non iTunes media type will be decoded in software hence the lag you are experiencing.

How many times does this need to be said? If people read the whole thread they would already be well aware of this!

I recently bought AVPlayerHD and none of my Avi files play. They are choppy, the video skips, the sound screeches or the movie just does not play. Sometimes the app won't even open. I have enough free space on the ipad and yes I am adding the files through iTunes. I am beginning to think the problem may be with my iPad! I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app, tried different length movies etc and have not been able to use this app successfully. Rather disappointed after having bought it too. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Relax. Your iPad is fine. .avi files are prehistoric and require minimal CPU power. To convince your self just go and watch some YouTube videos or something on the ipad 's native player.
I am guessing you have a first generation iPad or you are not running the latest iOS on your iPad.
How am I doing so far?

I have the latest software, OS 5.1.1 and am on the iPad 2. I have no problems with YouTube vids. You think avi files are the problem? Should I convert them to something else?

I had the iPad 2 and I don't remember having any issues with avi files. mkv files though could be temperamental.

Jailbreak and install XBMC. Problem solved.

But I did see the update claiming hardware acceleration, so did wonder the same.. :p

I used to love this app. Unfortunately the lack of support for streaming from my seagate Goflex Satellite has meant I have had to switch players. Add support for that and I'd be back in a shot

Ok I should have read a bit more before I bought this app because now realise I can't stream direct from my readynas to my iPad with this. What app can I use to stream direct with no pc running in between. 8player works a treat but won't do mkv smoothly.

Just an update, when I play a file on the iPad picture is fine, however if I connect my iPad to a TV via the HDMI the same video looks compressed. however when I play the video via my mac mini which is connected to my TV the file video looks a lot clearer and uncompressed. Any recommendations for settings to avoid this compression or a player that doesn't compress?

Yes, I do this all the time for content that isn't compatible with the standard video player.

BBC iPlayer and TVCatchup also work. Annoyingly Lovefilm doesn't. Not tried Netflix or ITV player with the AV adapter yet.

Just recommended this to a friend for his iPad, and he said he could not find it in AppStore. I thought he was just being a doughnut, but, he's right!

It's disappeared, says 'not available in uk iTunes'?

Could it just be while the apps are being updated for ios6?

No longer available. An email a friend got from the developers today.

something to do with the hardware acceleration which they can't do- so I have been told.

Subject: Re: AVPlayerHD not on App Store UK
    Hello

We are terribly sorry for the inconvenience.
To our deepest regret, our applications have encountered error issues.
From Apple's consultation, we have decided to take AVPlayer, AVPlayerHD remove from Appstore.
We can't promise how long, but we will do our best to come back with a solution.

    Thanks you sincerely
