Onkyo TX-NR5007 AV Receiver Review

Reviewed by Russell Williams
The TX-NR5007 is a technical tour de force that hits all of the currently required marks asked in it's price class and sounds great across the board. It's value for money will largely depend on how many of the features, for which you are paying, will actually be of use, but the big Onkyo is deservedly going to find itself finding a place in many homes on the basis of it's audio performance alone.

Thanks Russel. great review.

Do you have an opinion on the 3007? How do you think it would compare to a Denon 3310?

I don't generally speculate upon the differences between models however, the differences between the 3007 and 5007 is going to be minimal. The 5007 gains an extra HDMI input (a total 8 like 7 wasn't enough) some gaming DSP modes I haven't bothered looking at and the frame transformer for the audio amplification goes from a frame to torroidal type and power output goes up slightly with it. Id bet on it taking a lot of careful back-to-back testing to tell significant differences, which makes the 3007 look tempting. Demo them - If you hear a difference, decide if it is worth it. If you cant, buy the cheaper one.

The Denon is between 1/2 to 1/3 the of the price, so I would be surprised if it competed at any level, especially if pushing the volume up where the big Onkyo will remain more composed.

Hi Russell,

Congrats on the review. I enjoyed it very much.

Just something that puzzles me a bit. You give the Onkyo "only" a good on value in your rating. That does not sound like a lot considering the unit (the brand) is widely acclaimed as the best bang-for-the-buck currently available. I was just surprised that's all.

It costs £2500, it's never going to be concidered excellent value when the vast majority of the features and performance can be had for a fraction of the price. Especially as he says that the 3007 will have nearly all the features and performance and be a grand less.

The highest end product of most companies are very rarely excellent value for money.

I noticed Hi Fi News has published the Miller Audio Research measurement of the TX-NR5007 on the web.

The measurements are grouped in to three main categories- Amplifier performance, DD & Base management and LPCM & HDMI Performance with a n umber of specific tests in each.

It appears to fail two of the three main categories. Make if that what you will.
