Sony launch their first curved 4K TVs

65 and 75-inch S90 comes with 4.2 audio system built-in too

After a bit of a false start following last year’s IFA announcements from Sony regarding launch of a Full HD curved LED TV, they’re back with the idea again but this time they have just launched a bendy 4K TV, with the new S90.
The S90 will be available in 75- and 65-inch sizes, and features a subtly contoured screen for that extra immersive quality. Certainly at these larger screen sizes, the curve starts to make more sense, even if we’re not fully convinced.

Naturally, the S90 features Sony’s TRILUMINOS tech which produces a very wide (by TV standards) colour gamut, although this is of limited use at present. The S90 also features their excellent 4K X-Reality PRO technology that upscales regular TV broadcasts and Blu-ray movies to four times the number of pixels of Full HD.

Sony says the picture quality on the S90 is the same as you’ll find on the superb X9 4K TV and we’ll settle for that but we’ll wait until we see one before passing judgement on those claims.

It also promises to be notable in the audio department as it features a brand new 4.2 channel Multi-angle Live Speaker system which uses separate drive units that direct Left and Right front and surround channels into the room at carefully-controlled angles.

The bass is provided by dual low-frequency woofers inside the TV. And if you want to go deeper still, an optional Wireless Subwoofer – in white, the SWF-BR100, or now available for the first time in a sleek black finish, the SW-BR100B – adds a decent low-end punch, as we heard when we had it during our time with the X8505.

We can’t say we’re surprised with this news but we’re certainly interested to see how Sony have handled the challenges of the curve. We’re not yet sure on release dates or pricing but we’ll update here as soon as we find out.
