Previewed at CES and now confirmed for European and UK markets, the 65PUS9809 Ultra HD 4K television will become the flagship Philips model when it releases in the third quarter of this year.
To underline its Android credentials, it has been certified by Google and provides easy access to the Google Play Store, as well as the existing Philips Smart TV Platform.
From a picture quality point of view, the PUS9809 will, of course, scale lower definitions to match its 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution and the TV also features the very promising sounding Micro Dimming Premium system.
There’s also ‘Bright Pro’ which is said to be able to boost the contrast locally to a light output that is two times better than standard LED backlight technology is able to deliver. We’re not sure how bright you really need it but it will be interesting to check out when we get one in for review.

144 dimming zones and a wireless subwoofer included
Micro Dimming Premium further optimises the contrast to deliver deeper blacks via the panel which features direct LED backlighting, which is split into 144 dimming zones – and that’s better than most!
Design wise, the Philips 65PUS9809 comes with a very slim anthracite-coloured metal bezel and stands on distinctively designed ‘edge’ feet. The TV’s clean design is complemented by four-sided Ambilight that throws a glow of light onto the wall behind the TV and it’s something we’ve always liked.
To finish off this high-end package, Philips are taking care with the audio quality by including a separate wireless subwoofer, which should beef up your low end considerably.
We don’t have pricing yet but we’ll update here when we do. One thing we will say, Philips has been very aggressive on pricing so far this year so we await this one with great interest and we’ll be hounding Philips for a review sample once they become available.
