The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Oscar winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in New York, he was 46.
The Newspaper are citing the New York Police Dept. as the source of their story, saying they discovered Mr Hoffman in the bathroom of an apartment, thought to be his own. There are also unconfirmed reports that drugs may have been a cause or contribution to his death. Hoffman only completed a 10-day substance abuse programme for heroin last year. The actor later revealed that he had been addicted to the drug when he was younger but said he had been clean for over 20 years.
In a critically acclaimed career the actor made his breakthrough as the thoroughly obnoxious George Willis Jr. in Scent of a Woman, before gaining further attention in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights and Todd Solondz’s Happiness. He also appeared in high profile studio productions including Twister, The Big Lebowski, The Talented Mr Ripley, Almost Famous, Red Dragon and Cold Mountain. He appeared opposite Tom Cruise in Magonolia, as well as in Mission Impossible III playing the main villain. He teamed up with Paul Thomas Anderson for two more films, Punch Drunk Love and The Master. The latter earned Hoffman his third nomination for Best Supporting Actor after previous nods for Charlie Wilson’s War and Doubt. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005 for Capote, the story of the author Truman Capote and his struggle to write his groundbreaking book 'In Cold Blood'.
Most recently he had appeared as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and was currently filming the last two films in the series, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Parts 1 and 2. Where his death leaves production on these films remains to be seen but The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 is due for release in November.
