LG launches World's First Curved Ultra HD 4K OLED TV in the UK

Is this the Holy Grail of TVs?

by Steve Withers
MSRP: £19,999.00
They teased us at CES but now LG make good on their promise by launching the World's First Curved Ultra HD 4K TVs here in the UK.
The 77” (77EC980V) and 65” (65EC970V) TVs combine LG’s proprietary WRGB OLED technology and Ultra HD 4K screen resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) for a whole new level of picture quality. At these kind of screen sizes 4K resolution and curved screens make sense and they're supported by LG's rather attractive 'ribbon' stand. The 77” model was the recipient of the highly-prized Best of Innovations at the 2014 CES Innovations Awards and is the World’s largest screen of its kind.

In terms of the technology in these new TVs, the colour temperature of each pixel on their enormous 77” and 65” screens is automatically controlled by the LG Colour Refiner, resulting in superior consistency and balance. Whilst their contrast ratio is adeptly managed by LG’s High Dynamic Range (HDR) algorithm. They also include LG's ULTRA CINEMA 3D which, thanks to their film-type patterned retarder (FPR) technology and Ultra HD 4K resolution, can deliver incredibly convincing 3D effects.

For more high resolution viewing options, the 77EC980V and 65EC970V are equipped with LG’s own True 4K Engine Pro, which can upscale SD, HD or Full HD content to perfectly match the 4K panel. The results are rendered even more seamless due to the error-correction capabilities of the enhanced super resolution algorithm to prevent blurred image from the upscaling process. The TV also incorporates Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC) to make the onscreen action appear smoother and clearer.

LG’s Curved Ultra HD 4K OLED TVs are also future-proof, able to decode broadcast signals in both H.264 and HEVC H.265 formats, at 30p or 60p. A convenient built-in decoder makes it possible to display Ultra HD 4K content from external devices connected via the TV’s HDMI, USB or LAN ports. They also include LG's superb webOS/Smart+ platform that has just been awarded an AVForums Reference Status badge.

However the best news is the pricing, with the 65" model retailing for a very tempting £5,999. That's well below our guesstimate at CES, although we were closer with the larger 77" model will set you back a hefty £19,999. Still that's a small price to pay for TVs that LG claim are PicturePerfect - wonder where they got that from?
