As far as the TV market is concerned, Quantum Dot technology has been the reserve of Sony’s Triluminous technology, so far.
Not any longer, as Chinese manufacturer TCL is using IFA to launch their new 55-inch full-gamut 4K UHD TV. Rather vaguely, the manufacturer says the suggested retail price is one-third the cost of ‘comparable OLED’ televisions. We’ll speculate that means around £1,000-1,200 but we’ll try and get proper clarification on that.
To be clear, when it’s said that this is a Quantum Dot TV, that doesn’t mean this is some radically new tech. The TV will still use LCD pixels – and some LED illumination - but the QD’s will allow an extension to the usual colour gamut, which might prove genuinely useful one day.

It costs a third of the 'equivalent OLED TV' - what ever that means...
“We are pleased to extend our relationship with QD Vision to the exciting new 4K UHD world. The addition of QD technology to our 4K televisions will offer great value to consumers who want to enjoy the advanced picture quality with vivid colors and shaper images”
In case you didn’t know TCL is the world’s third best-selling television brand, and QD Vision is the leading manufacturer of quantum dot optical components for HDTVs and other LCD products.
The new TVs will initially be available in China, followed by additional worldwide availability and hopefully we’ll catch a glimpse while we’re out in Berlin this week.
