Dolby Atmos Blu-rays coming in Autumn 2014
Dolby Atmos sound will begin appearing on Blu-ray discs and streaming services this autumn, with more titles to come into 2015
Dolby has also confirmed that you won’t need a new Blu-ray player to get in on the action either, as according to Brett Crocket, Dolby’s sound research director, “existing players that fully conform to the Blu-ray specification will be able to support Dolby Atmos content on a Blu-ray Disc.”

This will be done by the players sending out the Atmos bitstream through their HDMI outputs to AVR’s and processors equipped with Atmos decoders.

Atmos places individual sounds into a room by assigning each one an X, Y, and Z coordinate. Of course one of the major selling points of Atmos is its ability to place sounds overhead but if you (or someone else in the house) is not keen on the idea of ceiling mounted speakers, Crockett says their, “partners will offer new Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers that produce full, detailed overhead sound from speakers located where your conventional speakers are now.”
Could Godzilla be one of the first titles on disc?
Additionally, those that don’t want to replace their existing multichannel speaker setup can opt for an add-on Atmos-enabled speaker module, which consumers could place on top of their existing speakers, he said.

We’ve literally just broken the news that Denon and Onkyo have announced Atmos enabled products and, according to news site Twice, Pioneer has just done so too, so expect more Atmos news coming up soon!
