12 Years a Slave and Gravity share the spoils at the Oscars
In one of the most predictable Oscar races in years, it was the space drama Gravity that took home the biggest haul with seven wins, mostly in the technical categories.
It won Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron, who also took home a second Oscar for Best Editing, which he shared with Mark Snager. The film also won Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki and, unsurprisingly, Best Visual Effects. In a near sweep of all the technical awards, it also won Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, whilst Steven Price won for Best Music.

As expected, 12 Years a Slave won Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley and Lupita Nyong’o beat out Jennifer Lawrence to take home Best Supporting Actress. In the other acting categories Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for her performance in Blue Jasmine and Matthew McConaughey won Best Actor for his remarkable portrayal of Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. It was a one-two for that film, with Jared Leto also picking up the award for Best Supporting Actor and the film ultimately won a third award for Best Make-up and Hair.

Spike Jonze picked up the award for Best Original Screenplay for Her and Catherine Martin picked up two for The Great Gatsby - Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. Disney’s smash hit Frozen picked up Best Animated Film and Best Song for “Let it Go”. The Great Beauty picked up Best Foreign Language Film and 20 Feet from Stardom was named Best Documentary.

The big loser was American Hustle which went home empty handed, despite receiving ten nominations. Other films that failed to win any awards included The Wolf of Wall Street and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. For the second year in a row, a Peter Jackson film has gone home empty handed - it would appear that Hollywood’s love affair with Middle Earth is well and truly over.
