Review Verdict
Mr & Mrs Smith is one of those no brainer action flicks that can while away a couple of hours. What makes it standout is the chemistry between the two main stars and their tempestuous relationship is given full reign as the bullets start flying. I enjoyed it far more than I thought, even if it is aimed fairly and squarely at the MTV generation, there is a style and pace that cannot be ignored and when it’s presented this well, it’s worth the time invested.

As a Blu-ray package it seems a mystery why Fox delayed this title for so long, there are no new extra features compared to the SD release, the picture while very good is not exceptional and while the sound is exceptional I’m not sure it warranted nine months of mixing. The package then is like the picture, good but not great.

Mr & Mrs Smith Review

Well, it’s been a long time coming. Nine months in fact. And in all that time has there been a vast improvement in quality? In the extras available? No, it’s still the same old rubbish road junction but now with added white lines. However, Mr & Mrs. Smith, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s fast pace action thriller has also taken that amount of time to come to Blu-ray since its initial release date way back in March. And amazingly enough there doesn’t appear to be any difference between this disc and the one advertised all those months ago. Perhaps it’s all in the transfer….

Average John, John Smith (Brad Pitt) and average Jane, Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie) met, fell in love and married. After five (or six) years, their marriage is in a bit of a slump and they seek counselling. Things, however, don’t come to a head until their respective secret lives come colliding together and the pair have to readdress their relationship. For, you see, both John and Jane work for secret organisations as assassins, and when they are unwittingly sent to terminate the same target, they find themselves pitted against each other. And in the following struggle to kill each other their flagging relationship has a sudden new sparkle and together again they team up against the very forces that employ them. Who will come out on top?

As a film, it is very by the numbers; the plot is laid out very nicely and moves from set to set without pause or hindrance. However, where it does score points is in Doug Liman’s style and the chemistry between the two leads. Now it’s no secret that during the filming Pitt and Jolie began their own relationship that ended Pitt and Aniston’s. Since the film wrapped the pair have become Hollywood’s golden couple. But who cares about that. The only good thing to come of this gossip is that there is a genuine fire about Pitt and Jolie when they are on screen. And Liman capitalises on it at every opportunity. Witness the dance scene as they feel each other up to find concealed weapons, or their first hand to hand fight with its near sex connotations, not to mention their sex scene. You get the feeling that these two actually would stand together to take on a mass of gun wielding lunatics. At the end when Pitt asked the unseen therapist “ask the sex question” the spark between them is one of actual sex.

Ok, enough of these two, no matter how good the chemistry, they need a script to work to. And as already said it’s as simple as they come but with enough pace and action to keep you watching. There is little originality, many of the big stunts being seen in many other films, but they seem to pull it off by the banter between the two leads. When they are trapped at the end of the film and are preparing to go out guns blazing, Liman pulls on the greats, Bonnie and Clyde, Butch and Sundance, hell even Romeo and Juliet (of a fashion) when against all odds if you are partnered with the one, insurmountable odds mean nothing. However, I bet you can guess this one doesn’t quite end as those tragedies do. Don’t expect to see much depth in the film; layers of sex/death or truth and trust or even love will out are there if you want to see them, but really, folks, this is nothing more than an enjoyable shoot ‘em up and really should be viewed on that level. As the saying goes, sit back, remove brain and enjoy.
