Re: Problem sharing xbox with pc

Im certainly no networking expert. In fact, I will be posting a networking question shortly myself, but my experience in this subject tells me you need to make sure your shares are setup in your PC, and if they are, as a previous poster states. Go to Workgroup, then it should show your PC's name.

Give it a go, and let us know what messages you get when you try that.

Re: Problem sharing xbox with pc

How it works is if you are using Xbmc say choose video then you will get options such as your DVD drive and one of those is workgroupSMB this will search your network for workgroup mshome PC's it will then list the PC's that it finds that belong to mshome then click that then it will list the folders that you have set up to share under MShome then you just click the relevant video file and it will stream to your xbox outout.

SO you need to set up a home network and sharing and security permsissions on the relevant folders/files

But if he is using an older build, then he will only see his folders if he edits the xml file.

I think the password is xbox:xbox, not xbox/xbox.

Re: Problem sharing xbox with pc

If at all possible verify that you can see the shares from another PC, before trying with xbox. (borrow a laptop if necesssary).

Makes problem determination a lot easier if you know the PC end is set up correctly.

What are you using to access the xbox if FlashFXP you should get something like this

Password is xbox and the ip address may vary see in settings screen on your xbox what xbmc says your ip address is

Just press coneect and it will find it.

If you then get another password box then obviously you have a sharing and security parameter set up that you need to change

Re: Problem sharing xbox with pc

Just go into xbmc choose what you want to play video music then choose workgroupsamba then you will see your mshome workgroup computers the choose the file you want to stream easy.

Obviuously you want to make sure the files you wish to stream have sharing enabled.

Re: Problem sharing xbox with pc

1. Right click My Computer, Properties, Computer Name, Full Computer Name - write that down**
2. Find folder you have on your PC that has media you want to share
3. Right click, Sharing And Security, Share This Folder, Share Name - write that down***
4. FTP into XBox, XBMC folder, UserData folder and right click and edit sources.xml

Scroll down to find this:

<!-- my video shares !-->
<video>
<default />

and add this directly underneath:

<bookmark>
<name>Videos on PC</name>
<path>smb://**/***</path>
</bookmark>

It should all end with this:

</video>

Add in the names ** and *** as mentioned above.

Save and upload sources.xml

Restart XBMC and see if that works

Just followed your instructions there and now have the bookmarks listed in the folders.

However when I click on them I get the message

Remote Share
Could not connect to Network Server

Firewalled? Add a rule to any firewall you have to allow all traffic (in & out) of IP addresses on your local network i.e. 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.10 or 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.10

Re: Problem sharing xbox with pc

Not wanting to state the obvious but you do all actually have a network set up with file shares?

You either need to set up a network with your xbox connected into your router with a standard network cable (you could also have a wireless connection to your XBox, but let's keep it simple) or connect one PC direct to the xbox (no router) using a crossover cable.

Either way you need to set up a network in Windows and enable file sharing, then enable the sharing on any drives (or folders) you want to stream from.

Once this is set up then you can browse the drives in XBMC using the Workgroup SMB selection in My Videos (or My Music, etc...). I would recommend using the latest XBMC builds because you don't need to mess about with any xml files and you can set up shortcuts to any folders on your PC easily to.

Regards,

Daz
