Xbox resurrection - media help wanted

Spent best part of hour in parents attic and found my original xbox - its been boxed for best part of year and hardly used prior to that

Its a chipped box - new HD - lots of software type thing - however I have chuff all idea how to get the best from it - it was hardly used once I got it chipped due to personal circs

Anyway - how (if at all) can I do the following

(1) Get it to boot into a front end similar to that of the 360 or Media Center
(2) Play divx and xvid files that are stored on my PC in another room of house

All I really want it for is a media extender in another room

If anyone can give me step by step (and bear in mind im an idiot) guide I would be more than happy (and be able to get out of decorating this pm)

Re: Xbox resurrection - media help wanted

theres a big thread about softmodding on the forum and a link to download the CASH installer disc, as long as that works with your chip it should be everything you need. i softmodded mine with that disc a couple of days ago. that will let you play divx etc and run emulators and all sorts of stuff

Re: Xbox resurrection - media help wanted

You are chipped already so no need for the soft mod.

Download AID and burn ISO, then run and install XBMC. Or torrent XBMC and FTP into the XBox. Read the XBMC manual to see how to install as a dashboard as this process has changed recently. Also how to share files from PC. If not on AID 3.10, then download 360 skin for XBMC and install to skins directory.

Also look here for some handy downloads from triplea4uk....inc. a full E drive structure with XBMC set as a dashboard.

By using FTP. Avalaunch should give you the IP address of the XBox (using a router or cross-over cable connected to the PC). FlashFXP is a recommended FTP client. Username and password are usually both xbox

Re: Xbox resurrection - media help wanted

Thanks all very very much

Now have my xbox booting direct to XBMC and playing files off my PC upstairs - most happy

Just one last thing - how do I clean up the "My Videos" section

At moment I click on it - Find the "UPnP" section - find my network and click on that - then click on folders and then a final click on the folder thats on my PC

Is there anyway I can just get this folder to show up in "My Videos" straight away ?

Also - many, many moons ago I purchased the DVD kit and have the remote dongle attached to front of teh box - however no longer got the remote

Can a Harmony be used and if so what device is it classed as

Re: Xbox resurrection - media help wanted

Fast work my man...decorating certainly didn't get in the way of that....

Harmony can be used. Game Console (with DVD) / Microsoft / XBox.

I have shared folders on my PC and then edit UserData/sources.xml and add a bookmark in My Videos as this:

<bookmark>
<name>TV on PC</name>
<path>smb://Evo/XBox/TV</path>
</bookmark>
<bookmark>
<name>Films on PC</name>
<path>smb://EVO/XBox/Movies</path>
</bookmark>

Where Evo is the name of the PC and TV & Movies are all shared folders within XBox which is also a shared folder.

Once you have those working you can delete all the other 'bookmarks' out of the .xml

With you as far as the first <bookmark>

I use Media Connect - do I just change the evo bit to say what ever it says on my xbox when i click UPnP (Home Cinema PC or similar)

Re: Xbox resurrection - media help wanted

Right click My Computer - Properties - Computer Name - Full Computer Name
Whatever is written there is the name you need to put in the bookmark

Media Connect? Not sure what that is...
